I like the name Will (William) and my husband is not keen on William and would prefer Wilson. Both would be shortened to Will but I am just not sure about Wilson as a first name.

What do other people think of it??

Not sure on Wilson. I kind of like it but not 100%. I have never heard of it has a first name but the more I say it the more I think it is growing on me

LadyCLC · 25/02/2011 18:07

Thanks

I have googled it and there are lots of Wilson's in USA but not many registered in UK. The only famous one it comes up with is an actor called Wilson Cruz. My husband came up with it as he know an old man called Wilson - one minute I like it the next I don't.......

I really need other opinions, I dont want a name that people are going to pull a face at when I tell them....

My surname so I would probably Hmm

LadyCLC · 25/02/2011 18:11

I suppose same would apply to all the Jackson's, Harrison's, Spencer's out there - there appears to be a trend on using surnames and first names......

It's OK but I'm not keen on surnames as first names. Love William though!

EauRouge · 25/02/2011 19:19

It reminds me of the basketball in that Castaway movie and one of the trains in Chuggington.

DramaInPyjamas · 25/02/2011 19:24

I went to school with a Wilson. I like it, it's different, but not so different. iyswim.

Sounds to me like a traditional Jamaican name - see link above and scroll down for list.

riojaguzzler · 27/02/2011 20:23

I'm afraid I have to agree with Eau Rouge- Castaway!! Hmm

JulesJules · 27/02/2011 20:26

It would be an excellent name for a cat, not so much for a human, imo.

southeastastra · 27/02/2011 20:27

i too think of the basketball

Firawla · 27/02/2011 23:46

I immediately think of chuggington, but it's quite cute I think the chuggington thing prob makes me like it more tbh Blush
It also does sound quite american though

meditrina · 27/02/2011 23:57

I thought Mustang Sally - Wilson Pickett.

It does strike me as more of a US than a UK first name.

nooka · 28/02/2011 05:28

Wilson is very surnamy to me. William is a much nicer name.

Other "wil/will" possibilities: Wilbur, Willoughby, Wilfred, Willard

I work with a Wilfredo. However I still think that William is the best, although pretty much all the Williams I know are called Bill.

randomimposter · 28/02/2011 08:11

First thought was Chuggington. But remembered I did work with a Wilson, he'd be in his 50s now. From the North-East.

I have a William (Billy for now but suspect he'll morph into a Will when he's a cool teen).

Either work?

Don't like surnames used as names.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 28/02/2011 08:17

Posh soldier in Dads Army.
another who doesn't like surnames for firsts.
Would you consider Will.I.Am? Like the Black eyed pea character. I am not sure a registrar would OK the punctuation in the middle though.

humanfraggle · 28/02/2011 13:38

Ooo, I like it!

It's different but not crazy Grin

cumbria81 · 28/02/2011 14:48

it's a surname. don't do it.

birdofthenorth · 05/03/2011 23:57

Would add Willem to the list of other Will names (like Defoe) but I like Willoughby too! Wilson is ok IMHO, quite edgy, and makes Will or Wills or Sonny, but it reminds me if the Castaway ball too! Though that wouldn't resonate for your Wilson's peer group. Btw, if you liked me calling him "your Wilson", he's probably already your Wilson!

meditrina · 06/03/2011 10:23

I think the Dad's Army character was Sgt Arthur Wilson (Wilson being his surname).

The only other "Will" name I can think of in addition to nooka's suggestions is Wilberforce.

montylady · 06/03/2011 22:06

I like it Smile

kitkat1000 · 06/03/2011 22:09

i really dislike surnames as names - if you will call him Will, why not just name him Will then?

CheerfulYank · 06/03/2011 22:11

I like Wilson, because I like Wilson on House so much :)
