Do you like either for a girl, & if so which do you prefer? Is Phoebe really faddy? Ta!

Phoebe

Although round here it is rather popular.

hellymelly · 22/02/2011 21:16

Magda.Very elegant.

Rhubarbgarden · 22/02/2011 21:18

Magda. I dislike Phoebe, personally.

OliveMalay · 22/02/2011 22:17

I like Phoebe :)

Magda is rather harsh.

PaulaYatesbiggestfan · 22/02/2011 23:26

Magda definitely. Sweet for a tiny cool for a teenager and different. Fab

LetThereBeRock · 22/02/2011 23:33

Definitely not Magda. It has an ugly sound.

weegiemum · 22/02/2011 23:34

Magda comes from Mary Magdalene, who was a prostitute, if that bothers you?

feedthegoat · 22/02/2011 23:36

My sil is Magdalena (Magda for everyday purposes). I quite like it.

EightiesChick · 22/02/2011 23:37

Phoebe. I really like it. Maggie is nice but Magda's too harsh IMO.

redstripeyelephant · 23/02/2011 10:44

Magda with nn Maggie is lovely! Phoebe is nice too, but Magda has the edge for me, and is less common.

paulbrom · 23/02/2011 12:28

Phoebe.

Magda sounds like an unhappily divorced lecturer who makes a clumsy pass at her boss at a faculty drinks party.

Apologies to any Magdas, it just sounds really serious and grown up to me, and not in a nice way. Magdalena is nice though!

8rubberduckies · 23/02/2011 12:48

Phoebe is a bit meh in my opinion, although I know it is very popular on here. I think Magda is an unusual and strong (but not harsh) name and would definitely choose it over Phoebe.

Suncottage · 23/02/2011 12:50

I know a Magda, she is a right-on man hating feminist who is always ill and going to the doctors.

Horrid name

Phoebe, very sweet.

tummytickler · 23/02/2011 12:53

I love Magda - really strong and elegant.
Phoebe is a bit wishy washy and bland.

feedthegoat · 23/02/2011 15:48

Well, to counter some of the Magda images on this thread my sil is very girly, attractive and generally lovely!

The only point I meant to mention before is that alot of people here do mispronounce her name as Magna. I have no idea why because it is not a remotely difficult name to pronounce. My mum and I have had more run ins than enough with my dad on his repeat offending Grin.

mathanxiety · 23/02/2011 16:59

I love Magda. Nice German name, very chic imo.

thunderbird69 · 23/02/2011 17:03

Prefer Magda.

Never liked Phoebe, always makes me think 'feeble'

CrazyHorse · 23/02/2011 17:05

Pheobe

ValiumSingleton · 23/02/2011 18:43

Phoebe is lovely. Not crazy about Magda. If you'd said Maggie or Phoebie I'd be torn.

birdofthenorth · 24/02/2011 12:30

Ooh, big split on Magda, seems a bit Marmite! Still love it though, ESP with Maggie or Mags as nns. Think I'd rather a Marmite name than a meh name! I do love Phoebe but I am a bit concerned it's too trendy to feel timeless (& hard to spell for kids).

Pheobe

ItsJustAName · 24/02/2011 21:36

Phoebe. Magda is quite clunky, and harsh sounding to my ear (and eye)

Harimad · 24/02/2011 21:40

Magda will always be my nana's (elderly) spanish friend. But I do like Maggie.

Quite like Phoebe - is it trendy? I thought it was timeless.

lovenest · 25/02/2011 00:29

Love Phoebe, how about Maddy?

coraltoes · 25/02/2011 08:43

Magda sounds a bit eastern european to my ears, but is a very pretty name. Just realised it must have biblical origins (Magdalen?) so i must be wrong Smile
