Worst spelling of perfectly ordinary names? Elyviya anyone?

I have met a Danyal, Daniol, Naiphthan, Caytie and an Alivia. Why do people consign their children to a life time of 'no, that's Daniel spelt...'? Any equally terrible ones out there?

Yup-its true !a little boy I knew at school. His mother was supremely dim.

snuffaluffagus · 20/12/2011 14:27

You know, uniform spellings are a modern invention.. people used to be able to spell their own names a multitude of ways didn't they.. I think that would be more fun (if problematic in the digital age..)

Anyway, I have met an Aliss.

Pomtastic · 20/12/2011 14:30

Worst I've ever heard: La-a.

Pronouced? Ladasha, of course. Apparently the mum gets snippy with anyone who doesn't pronounce it right first time as well Xmas Confused

Took me embarrassingly long to work out the dash connection!

Thumbinnapuddingwitch · 20/12/2011 14:37

Worst I know was a girl at school years ago - called Mysheele. Worst spelling of Michelle ever.

broccolitrees · 20/12/2011 14:39

la-a?? seriously? and gooie?? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHA
also laughed out loud at chelsea bunn!! i don't think that people do think that through at all OR they have an incredible sense of humour and expect the same of their children.

isn't there a news reporter called juila caesar??

brachy · 20/12/2011 14:40

Analise- surely Annalise, looks too anal to me.
Micheal- mis-spelling of Michael, parents were considering deed-poll
Kianu- as in Keanu
DJ- short for DJ
Arry- not remotely Scandinavian (Ari)
Klo-e - Chloe
Hanner- why oh why?
Emma-Leigh

SIL ended up with a very bizarre spelling of Catherine, the blame is on FIL.

whimsicalname · 20/12/2011 14:55

We have a couple of reasonably normal names, but with extraneous punctuation at nursery.

Cam'ron springs to mind.

MamaLazarou · 20/12/2011 15:02

Fynly
Madyson
Bethenay

I also know a woman called Sinead who insists it is pronounced 'Shin-ED'.

everybodysang · 20/12/2011 15:12

the La-a one comes up on every single 'silly' name thread I ever look at.

The Truth About La-a?

At least someone shot down the Limonjello/Oranjello story early on.

MamaLazarou · 20/12/2011 15:15

As well as the old 'La-a' chestnut, there is always someone who vaguely remembers hearing about someone called Yvonne pronounced Why-vonny or whatever.

candytuft63 · 20/12/2011 15:21

Thats what i thought, Mama.
Gooie is bonafide, though.
Poor Gooie !

Skodafabulous · 20/12/2011 15:29

Summa

miSaltireandwine · 20/12/2011 16:01

I know a Lyam too - obviously pronounced Liam. The mum admittd that she wanted her son to be different

spiderpig8 · 20/12/2011 16:11

Gooie sounds like a foreign pronounciation. How is Guy pronounced in French for example?

candytuft63 · 20/12/2011 16:22

In French -pronounced Gee, with a hard G.
Poor Gooie should have been Guy.

ShengdanRoad · 20/12/2011 16:36

Has anyone trotted out "Chlamydia" yet?

JugglingWithGoldandMyrhh · 20/12/2011 16:38

But no-ones ever been called that Shengdan, have they ?

meala · 20/12/2011 16:54

I was watching an ancient episode of The Crstal Maze last night and there was a girl on it with the name Kertreena (typed on name badge and pronounced Catriona)!.

CheerfulYank · 20/12/2011 17:24

I know a Daysie and a Kinnidi. (Pr Daisy and Kennedy of course Xmas Hmm)

And a Xhadyn. Which is Zay-den. But that isn't a normal name anyway.

sunnysunchild · 20/12/2011 17:45

I saw a Holliegh - I thought it was a typo and the mother meant Holleigh at the very least, but no, she meant Holliegh...

ShengdanRoad · 20/12/2011 18:54

Exactly, JugglingWithGoldandMyrhh. That's the point I was trying to make.

Bunbaker · 20/12/2011 19:12

Isn't it tempting to spell the poor child's name "correctly" when you see these ridiculous spellings just to annoy the parents or show them how thick they are

stercaSancta · 20/12/2011 19:41

The most recent one I've come across is Jorgie. For a girl. Just looks so terribly wrong. It isn't short for anything - just Jorgie. Yuck.

cowboylover · 20/12/2011 20:21

Jaxon for Jackson Blush

dogindisguise · 20/12/2011 20:23

I had an email from a Sharn (Sian I presume) once. I also saw a Brie on facebook (presumably Bree - Brie makes me think of cheese!)
