Worst spelling of perfectly ordinary names? Elyviya anyone?

I have met a Danyal, Daniol, Naiphthan, Caytie and an Alivia. Why do people consign their children to a life time of 'no, that's Daniel spelt...'? Any equally terrible ones out there?

I didn't realise Hana was a legit spelling as I hadn't come across it before so thanks for clearing that up.

It's amazing that fir some of these very oddly spelt names there's more than 1 child out there with the same name!

I realised after posting the first time that I can't really criticise too much as I don't spell my name the normal way! Although it is a shortened name anyway and I have come across a few others with the same spelling.

Aoife is beautiful.

Hatterbox · 24/02/2011 13:20

elvisgirl - is there any chance she has Polish heritage, as Krystyna is the Polish spelling.

Sidge · 24/02/2011 13:42

Armarni (yes with the extra r)
Staysea
Jaxon
Andreigha

mrslsmith · 24/02/2011 14:46

lol I went to school with a Chivone - she never knew why it wasnt spelt the irish way...

inmysparetime · 24/02/2011 15:01

there was a Chyna in my son's class, but I have taught several oddy spelt children, like Martyn, Pawlo, Matteo (I've just noticed they were all boys)

I am married to an Alasdair, so I spend an inordinate amount of time explaining how that one's spelt!

inmysparetime · 24/02/2011 15:02

Also I teach a Hadyn, although his parents can't agree how that is spelt, so half his paperwork is Hadyn and the other half is Hayden. Go figure.

Nonnash · 24/02/2011 16:24

How about the same first and last name? I'm about to marry my partner who's last name is the same as my first... Will people laugh at me??? Oh lord! :)

Blatherskite · 24/02/2011 16:28

Matteo is a valid Italian boys name.

Kathsmum · 24/02/2011 16:57

Shanade, paegan both girls Shannon for a boy!

nightingale452 · 24/02/2011 17:06

My grandparents once told us about a family they knew who had a 'Gooey' (Guy) - he'd been named after the doctor who delivered him, apparently, but they'd only seen his name written down.

I used to work with a Naythan - email addresses in the company were always firstname.surname, and he was forever having to explain there was an extra y in his name as he wouldn't receive emails as people had spelt his name wrong.

I can't understand why anyone would commit their child to a lifetime of spelling - we have a weird surname so our DDs were given names they would hopefully never have to spell!

Blatherskite · 24/02/2011 17:25

Shannon is named after a river/county in Ireland and is Unisex so can be used for both boys and girls.

As can Kim

laurieleigh · 24/02/2011 18:26

i decided a while back that the spelling of a child's name is directly linked to the parents' IQ!!

CheerfulYank · 24/02/2011 18:29

I know a Krystyna who is of Polish descent. Her mother almost named her Misty Rivers, (no...not joking) so it's a near miss I'd say.

duchesse · 24/02/2011 18:31

Nonnash- you don't have to take his name you know! There's no law that says you must. I know a woman who became something like Molly Polly (names changed to protect her) on marriage and think that's just about acceptable. Surely your DH would understand if you felt you couldn't?

spanky2 · 24/02/2011 18:48

My dh's boss's name is the Celtic spelling Ruairidh. Any guesses? Rory.

flootshoot · 24/02/2011 19:23

i think Fenix is legit - it's the spanish spelling, pronounced feh-nix. Although still an odd choice of name! I'm Sian, and spent my whole childhood correcting people's spelling/pronunciation of it, so why anyone would consign their child to a life of that when it's a 'normal' name is beyond me!

regeneration · 24/02/2011 19:37

Shithead (pronounced SHi-tEEd) Bad one Blush Shock

Jamima: Gemima to the rest of us

Lucie & Trey-C from X-factor

Eelissa: Eliza

LadyInPink · 24/02/2011 19:50

regeneration i've never seen Gemima spelt that way only Jemima!

I know of an Chakra and Karma (twin boys) and always thought that was weird!

ReshapeWhileDamp · 24/02/2011 19:56

Nagoo, I used to have a student at university called Typhane! And at first, I took it at face value and called her 'Tie-fane', because, well, you would, wouldn't you? She thought I was taking the piss! Grin She must have changed the spelling herself, there's no way her parents would've been that, um, creative with name spellings that long ago.

pookamoo · 24/02/2011 20:01

Hmmm... a teacher friend of mine said once that you can tell what the class will be like, and by default what their parents will be like, by looking at how the names are spelt on the register, before they even walk in the door!

Grandmasterpudge · 24/02/2011 20:12

are they all chavs by any chance? LOL at Elyviya& Danyal
Worst one instead of Nikki, Nike!!
Kayley

JiltedJohnsJulie · 24/02/2011 20:40

"I can't understand why anyone would commit their child to a lifetime of spelling" good luck to anyone who wants to avoid that. My name was very common when I was born, I was one of 5 in my class and am one of 4 at work but because of the odd unusual spelling I have to spell it everytime. Used to have a plain 4 letter lastname which I had to spell everytime too and now I have another very plain 4 letter lastname that I have to spell everytime. I'm sure even people named Jane have to spell it.

bikermoll · 24/02/2011 20:51

When I was in hospital having my daughter ,one of the doctors complimented me calling my daughter a normal name ( Elizabeth ) and mused aloud on why so many of the babies in Special Care had weird names , such as Spike . I think this calls for a scientific study !

mummypontipine · 24/02/2011 21:10

i also didn't use aoife ,niamh or aisling despite loving them as i was concerned she would face a life time of spelling her name or misprononciation etc
