Girls name shortlist

Hi all

I posted a few months ago and got some really useful feedback, my shortlist has since been modified. However I am due in a couple of weeks and am beginning to think we will never settle on a name for our baby. My favourite changes daily. I would love your advice on the following:

Current shortlist
Kitty
Esme (pronounced Esmee rather than Esmay I think)
Flora or Florence
Tabitha
Clementine (this was going to be the middle name but I can't decide whether I am 'brave' enough to use it as a first name)

Previous favourites (would still consider)
Imogen
Jemima
Harriet

Thank you in advance for your insight/inspiration!

Love Jemima and Harriet, Florence and Esme lovely too :)

OliveMalay · 17/02/2011 23:27

Kitty, Tabitha and Jemima - cat's names or Beatrix Potter characters
Esme - not keen
Flora - OK but prefer other nature names
Florence - lovely :)
Clementine - lovely :)
Imogen - OK
Harriet - quite like

cece · 17/02/2011 23:35

Kitty - sounds like a nn, think you will get asked what is it short for? all the time
Esme - rather biased on this one Wink but think it is lovely. However, I should add it does seem to be quite popular now with the under 5s
Flora or Florence - prefer Florence, OK and also like Florie
Tabitha - cats name
Clementine - cows name

Imogen - lovely
Jemima - lovely
Harriet - lovely, this is my second favourite

meditrina · 17/02/2011 23:49

I think Tabitha, Imogen and Jemima are lovely.

Florence, Harriet are nice, and Esme (though I prefer Esmay as the pronunciation).

Kitty is lovely, but more a nn.

I wouldn't go for Clementine because of the song, nor Flora because "spreads easily" could be unfortunate to live with (which is a shame, because I think it's a lovely name otherwise).

MelinaM · 18/02/2011 00:06

Tabitha, Clementine and Jemima are my favouritesSmile

Imogen, Florence and Esme are extremely popular at the mo, and are going to become even more so as the year progresses.

flopsy1974 · 18/02/2011 12:00

Love Florence and Clementine.

theagedparent · 18/02/2011 12:25

I like Kitty the best

growing3rdbump · 18/02/2011 12:29

Love Esme - would like it for DC3, but it's growing popularity has put me off quite a bit... still think about it daily tho!
Also like Florence from your list.

Horton · 18/02/2011 14:18

Kitty - this is a nickname, although very pretty. Would you consider Catherine/Katherine nn Kitty?

Esme (pronounced Esmee rather than Esmay I think) - like

Flora or Florence - Flora is (sadly) margarine. I think it's pretty. Florence is the Louise of our times.

Tabitha - love it. DD is Tabitha. Personally don't care about the cat associations. Cats are beautiful elegant creatures. Would think twice if it had, say, an elephant association.

Clementine (this was going to be the middle name but I can't decide whether I am 'brave' enough to use it as a first name) - this is a fruit. But I do see why you like it. How about Clemency? Also I have Clem/phlegm associations, sorry. And she will get called Clem.

Imogen - like but it somehow seems a bit wet to me.

Jemima - love it. Jem, Mima and Mimi all very sweet nicknames for little girls.

Harriet - love it. I think Hattie is a lovely nickname.

tomatoesontoast · 18/02/2011 14:26

go for clementine - I love it
also like Flora and Kitty (but as a nn)
Tabitha not to my taste, neither are Jemima & Harriet
don't really have an opinion on Imogen

BelligerentGhoul · 18/02/2011 16:07

Harriet rocks.

From your new list I like Kitty as a nn for Catherine.

EvianBaby · 18/02/2011 21:46

Thanks everyone - I think I've divided opinion, there doesn't seem to me a 'favourite' at the moment. Anyone else? Or any other suggestions?

I feel like I'm never going to decide and it's (stupidly) keeping me awake at night! I really do appreciate your opinions!

EvianBaby · 23/02/2011 21:23

Thanks everyone!

Think i'm down to
Flora or Florence Clementine
Clementine Mabel (just thought of this tonight!)
Esme Clementine

Couple of questions:
Would you use Florence on the birth certificate even if you intend to call her Flora? Or, in actual fact, do you prefer Florence anyway? Hope this makes sense!

Does it matter that Esme (according to MN wisdom) seems to be hugely popular - will it do the way of Evie/Isabelle/Lily (all beautiful names but I am trying to steer away from a top 5 name)

Are the nicknames/shortened versions of Clementine (i.e. Clem, Clemmie) really too bad to consider calling her this?

Thank you so much, only about 2 weeks to go and I really would like to decide on a name before then!
