Ozias

I found the names Ozias in my family tree, it then followed in subsequent generations etc. Sometimes as Ozias but also as Hosiah. I assumed the difference was just as it was heard.

Researching the name shows it's biblical but is mentioned twice Ozias and Ussiah.

So I'm confused as to the pronunciation, google says it's o-zye-s but I'd prefer o-sy-ah.

Tell me what's correct, please? If my preferred pronunciation works I may chuck it in the mix for future dc's.

Josiah and Hosea are Biblical names.

I can't find the names Ozias and Ussiah in a search of the NIV Bible.

If it's also listed in your family tree as Hosiah, then your family may well have pronounced it o-sy-ah. But it's such a rare name that I suspect people would try to say as spelt, and my guess would have been o-sy-yas.

I think you might regret not using it at all. Would it work in the middle?

QuestionNumber, when I've googled it states that Ozias was "Ussiah" King of Judah. Son of Amaziah.

I really would like to use it, although I'm not even pregnant but its such a rare name I know I'd better start work on DH now really!Def as a middle name though so the exact reason that people would automatically say it as spelt.

Ozias will be Greek (?) possibly, much like Judah becomes Judas and Tobiah becomes Tobias, Jonah = Jonas etc.

I think it's a fantastic name. I love Josiah, too.

Interesting, as I have several Oziases also in my family tree (my great, great, great grandfather was an Ozias!).

I love the name, and if I had known about it earlier, might have used it for a middle name for ds (but I only started researching my family tree after he was born).

The way my family pronounce it is O Zye As (and I am in touch with one member of my family whose FIL had this name, so she actually knew him).

May I ask where your family were from, as it's the sort of name which seems only to have occurred in certain areas of the country. My family were from Whitstable and Seasalter in Kent.

There is an Ozias at ds' nursery and it is pronounced o-zye-us by the staff(and presumably his parents)

I still cant convince my DH on it. I really like it as its so unusual but my mum did this face and its on her side of the tree too!
