Has anyone ever come across a Hedley? It was the name of a boy in a book we read and OH really likes it but I'm not convinced at all. It was shorted to Hed in the book

It's the name of a village about two miles down the road from here, so wouldn't be a great choice for us tbh....

gerontius · 12/02/2011 23:49

Terrible name.

MelinaM · 13/02/2011 00:19

I've only ever come across Hadley /Hadleigh. Hedley reminds me of Hedwig! It's nice enough! x

Darnsarfupnorf · 13/02/2011 00:26

i know a boy with hedley as his middle name, hes named after his great grandad

i wouldnt pick it though Wink

mathanxiety · 13/02/2011 02:52

Hedley shortened to Hed. Or more likely head {meaning toilet among other things}

DesertOrchid · 13/02/2011 09:57

I know one! He was a very talented jazz trumpeter, so I think it's kind of cool...

littleomar · 13/02/2011 09:59

and hadley's a girl's name (ernest hemingway's wife and the fashion editor of the guardian)

kreecherlivesupstairs · 13/02/2011 10:08

Shockingly bad name. I hope I never do come across a child called that. If I did I would stare at the parents. Very hard.

deliakate · 13/02/2011 10:51

I like it. Depends on the surname though. Our surname is a very common christian name, and so would not work as everyone would mix them up (more than they do now).

CameronCook · 13/02/2011 10:54

You'll be setting your child up for a life of name confusion if you use that.

HeartShapedValium · 13/02/2011 11:32

I have heard of the name Hadley in America. I think it is reasonably well known over there. I don't see its appeal at all.

I agree with Kreecher. It's shockingly bad. It makes me feel sad for the child who has such an ugly strange name. And I don't often say that. LOT of names not to my taste but no big deal as we all know that we can't like everything. But Hedly stops me in my tracks.

ThatllDoPig · 13/02/2011 13:21

I quite like it.
So does my 11 year old dd

Haven't heard of it and don't like it I'm afraid.

PorkChopSter · 13/02/2011 21:43

I know a Headley who is in his 60s.

onimolap · 13/02/2011 21:46

I've only come across it as a surname. Surnames do cross over to first names, but I don't think this one does it that well, sorry.

Dysgu · 13/02/2011 21:47

My DP has a great uncle Hedley. I have always rather liked the name - but then, that is on a man in his 90s.

EvilTwins · 13/02/2011 21:47

I know one. He's in his 60s. Named after a cricketer, I believe.

MrsDeidreIppy · 13/02/2011 22:53

Reminds me of the characters from Wuthering heights. I don't think any of them are called Hedly but they all have weird unusual names beginning with H.

Pancakeflipper · 13/02/2011 22:58

I know about 5. All over 60 yrs old if still alive. It's a fine name when over 30 but somehow doesn't suit a baby/ child...

I kinda like it but one of the Hedley's I know was a really lovely guy.

Janoschi · 13/02/2011 23:00

"Shockingly bad name. I hope I never do come across a child called that. If I did I would stare at the parents. Very hard."

This is a bit harsh, no? I think I'd nod and smile even if the proud parents came up with R2D2 for their dear child. Otherwise it's just rude.

For the record I like Hedley :-)

ThistleWhistle · 13/02/2011 23:09

Hedley always makes me think of this -

PricklyThistle · 13/02/2011 23:12

Oh, ThistleWhistle, you beat me to it Grin

Don't really have a view on the name one way or the other, but it instantly made me think of Blazing Saddles.
