Having a last minute wobble about name for DD due later this month.

Thought we'd settled on Alexandra (did like Lexie as nn but have been educated against it by MN, so not so sure now!) but now considering Katharine with nn. Kitty? Or perhaps Kate?

Any thoughts?

Hello Kitty Smile.

ThaliaKeith · 03/02/2011 11:45

Katharine a good name.

Although even better spelled another way Wink

poppydaisy · 03/02/2011 11:49

Not keen on Kitty, I'm afraid. Katharine is ok but might get very popular with Queen Katherine.

ramonaquimby · 03/02/2011 11:50

what's wrong with Lexie?

educated against it by MN? It's hardly the pulse of the nation here is it

BeautifulBlondePineapple · 03/02/2011 11:52

Love Kitty. And I like the idea of a more formal name for use on documents and when she's older, but would use KathErine instead of KathArine.

(I also liked Alexandra/Lexie, but have been put off by the comments on Mumsnet too!)

rachel234 · 03/02/2011 11:53

"have been educated against it by MN"

Educated against Lexie by a random collection of internet users... Hmm...

ThaliaKeith · 03/02/2011 11:54

It won't be Queen Katherine as she spells it Catherine.

cocoachannel · 03/02/2011 11:55

You're right Ramona..! Paying far too much credence to opinion on here.

My ds's name has been described as 'awful', 'terrible', even 'gay' on here by some posters, but in real life we get nothing but compliments and love his name Smile.

Don't let yourself be influenced too much by a random collection of internet users, you don't even know their tastes... You might hate their childrens' names...!

Hedwig3 · 03/02/2011 12:02

Love Kitty!

Katherine is not my kind of name but I do prefer it to Alexandra (too masculine to my ears)

Good luck choosing.

cocoachannel · 03/02/2011 12:04

It's funny. We're very deliberately not discussing names with people in real life so no to be influenced by opinion, or rather people's initial reaction before they inevitably say something nice which they don't mean! But I searched Lexie on here and was surprised to see the very negative comments and don't want to saddle my PFB with a name which is viewed in this way.

I realise however that I'm being daft- we'll go with what we feel is best.

I prefer the spelling Katherine, but I think Katharine as you've spelt it has a certain finesse about it.

And Lexie is a good nickname.

RamblingRosa · 03/02/2011 12:11

I love Lexie and Kitty. Go with what you love.

nickelthenaughtybutnicefairy · 03/02/2011 12:11

that wasn't complete, was it?

kitty/kate/katie are all good Katharine nicknames

not keen on Alexandra, personally, which is odd, cos I love Alexander for a boy Confused

katiepotatie · 03/02/2011 12:11

Katharine is lovely, I'm biased though as it is my name and imo the best way of spelling it Wink Katharine Hepburn spelt it this way too. I get called Kate or Katie. Go for it Grin

CharlieBoo · 03/02/2011 12:13

Kitty is lovely, and I like the use of Katherine with a K lol! It fits better with the nn Kitty then. Much nicer than Alexandra and Lexie IMO but if you love it, then go for it. Not everyone will like Kitty but its only you and your partner/hubby that count.

oh btw I love Alexandra too Smile

BarbieLovesKen · 03/02/2011 12:21

Im sorry but I hate Kitty. I just think "cat". Kate is absolutely gorgeous though Wink and also, if you are using Katherine (love it spelt with a "K", btw) I would go with an E, as others have mentioned.

nickelthenaughtybutnicefairy · 03/02/2011 12:52

Lockets - i think you mmight be right! Grin
i think it's also partly because my name is Andrea, and it's just too close.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 03/02/2011 13:10

Another yes vote for Kitty. I really like that name (along with Kate). Unfortunately my rule was no religious or family names allowed to be considered. I remembered about St. Katherine on her wheel and refused to consider it again. Fool I am.

youngjoly · 03/02/2011 14:23

Love it ... but then it is the name of my DD!

I suspect Kitty might well be a nn they grow out of as they get older and want something less cutsey... but I think Kate is beautiful for older girls.

My DD is the only Katherine / Kitty in her preschool, and in DD1s school, there is only 1 Katherine in a school of 300, so it has been a name quite out of vogue, but I seem to see it coming up on here more and more often these days...

jellybeans · 03/02/2011 19:55

I like both but if you use Lexie as a nn for Alexandra you have the whole initial confusion thing. Eg if you were Smith, is she L Smith or A Smith. So I would go for the other option.

EricNorthmansMistress · 03/02/2011 21:42

I think it's a bit naffola to decide what your DC's NN will be before they are born. I think you should choose a name you like and let a NN develop naturally if that's what happens. I'm Katherine and I happen to love my name, as it is. A couple of friends call me Kat but I have always been just Katherine. I do prefer Katherine to Alexandra.
