Hello all, I posted a while back when DP and I were TTC and now we've finally got there, we're still stuck. We've decided on middle names of Bartholomew James for a boy and Leonora Rose for a girl, but we can't figure out what we want for a first name. I'd love your opinions/suggestions on these:

Boys

Gilbert
Liev (pronounced Lee-EV)
Cillian
Anselm
Henry
Elias
Oisin
Edwin
Alban
Clement
Soren
Emile
Anders

Girls

Frieda
Julia
Elowen
Agatha
Hera
Beatrice
Juliet
Perdita
Coralie
Vita

Some tricky pronunciations there. Love Soren, Agatha and Coralie best.

AllieW · 30/01/2011 19:33

Henry or Clement are my favourites of your boy thoughts and go well with your middle names.

I'm not sure how well any of your girl suggestions go with the middle names (I have a sort of feeling a one-syllable name would be better), but of them I really like Beatrice and Coralie.

CrawlingInMySkin · 30/01/2011 19:36

I like Henry, Soren, Julia, Juliet (is on my list), Frieda .

Perdita makes me think of the dog in 101 Dalmations sorry.

belgo · 30/01/2011 19:38

Is Anders a typo for Andres?

Anders mean 'otherwise' in dutch.

FranSanDisco · 30/01/2011 19:38

Unusual I'll give you that.

BelligerentGhoul · 30/01/2011 19:39

Bartholomew James is absolutely gorgeous - do you really need to put something in front of it?

Leonora Rose is also nice.

Of the names you've listed I like Elias, Emile, Beatrice and Juliet. I like Elowen too but it doesn't sound right with Leonora imho.

Slanted · 30/01/2011 19:39

Love Clement and Emile. I think Clement sounds better with your middle names.

I also really like Frieda and Agatha, but agree that they don't sound great with your middle names.

onimolap · 30/01/2011 19:40

Gilbert - not wild about it
Liev - no, correcting pronunciation will drive you mad
Cillian - not really
Anselm - not really
Henry - lovely
Elias - lovely
Oisin - no, pronunciation again
Edwin - lovely
Alban - no
Clement - not really
Soren - no ( a bit reminiscent of Charlie and Lola?)
Emile - no (too girly for English speakers)
Anders - no

Frieda - Ok
Julia - lovely
Elowen - no
Agatha - lovely
Hera - lovely
Beatrice - OK
Juliet -OK
Perdita - lovely (but unfortunate meaning)
Coralie - Ok
Vita - no (health foods)

meadowlarks · 30/01/2011 19:53

Hm, ok, some mixed opinions. With the middle names issue, we chose names we liked and we basically thought that it wasn't totally vital whether it all flows together - how often do you say your whole name out loud anyway?

Belligerent - DP has refused Bartholomew as a first name much to my chagrin.

belgo - thanks for the heads up about Anders. It is definitely a real name, though. Current 4th in Sweden, I believe.

Interesting names - cool!

Boys: my fave is Soren. In fact I may steal it in the future! Also like Clement, Henry and Anselm.

Girls: Julia is my favourite from your list.

Tillyscoutsmum · 30/01/2011 20:35

I love Gilbert - that was on our list for DS. Also like Clement (but not sure about nn Clem ?) and Edwin

On your girls list - I like Julia/Juliet, Beatrice and Agatha but unfortunately don't think the "a" ending goes with your middle names. Could you drop the Leonora and just have Agatha Rose (or Julia Rose) ?

meadowlarks · 30/01/2011 21:11

Tilly - Gilbert is probably my personal fav but DP isn't as keen. The middle names are basically a compromise; DP wanted Leonora as a first name but I preferred some of our other choices, so it got demoted to MN. I don't think I could take it out without some serious argument.

Of your boys names I love Elias and Henry. From your girls list I think that Juliet works best.

cece · 30/01/2011 22:49

I like Perdita, but not really that keen on any of your other names. Sorry.

meadowlarks · 30/01/2011 23:03

No need to apologise - I did ask for your opinions!

Alice Leonora Rose

Don't know why I came up with two 'A's, but there you go.

Tryharder · 31/01/2011 00:34

I like Soren best on your boy's list. And Agatha or Beatrice on the girl's. I like the old lady chic names

meadowlarks · 31/01/2011 10:03

Cillian has a hard C, sorry, I should have said!

LadyWellian - Adam is my DP's name and I'm not keen on Alice. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Boys

Gilbert - like Gil but not Gilbert
Liev (pronounced Lee-EV) - nice but to me it sounds feminine
Cillian - quite like
Anselm - not to my taste - for some reason makes me think of the lion Aslam?
Henry - nah
Elias - nice
Oisin - love
Edwin - cute but not keen on Ed
Alban - nice but are you scottish / do you have scottish connections?
Clement - nice but poncy/posh (but that might not bother you)
Soren - really nice but makes me think of Soren Lorensen
Emile - really like this
Anders - not bad

Girls

Frieda - love love love
Julia - nice
Elowen - nice
Agatha - nice
Hera - don't like at all sorry
Beatrice - not bad
Juliet -not keen
Perdita - don't like because to me it just means 'lost'
Coralie - lovely
Vita - nice

meadowlarks · 31/01/2011 18:06

Right, so it seems that Soren/Henry/Clement are coming out top for the boys, and Julia/Juliet/Agatha/Beatrice for the girls. Hmm. I should say that Gilbert nn Gil has been on our minds for a while, but it doesn't seem too popular on here.

OP posts:
meadowlarks · 31/01/2011 18:08

Also, out of interest, how would you pronounce Soren?

OP posts:
Eglu · 31/01/2011 18:09

Out of your boys names I like

Liev
Elias
Oisin
Clement
Soren

Some of the others are a little feminine sounding.

Girls I like

Hera
Beatrice
Perdita
Coralie

flower38 · 31/01/2011 18:35

Henry and Juliet i also love Gilbert but would never be brave enough to pick it.
