Shirley

Shirley is my favourite name ever - I love it.
Dh has always said it is a bit close to dd2's name, but last night he said maybe that does not matter
So it is now a possibility. It is top of the list for me now I know dh would possibly use it. Dh prefers the other names on our list but could win him over i think.
So, what do you think?

Are your children’s vaccines up to date?
onadietcokebreak · 29/01/2011 07:57

I hate it. Can't imagine a child just old bat that Bullied me at work.

But it's all subjective

52Girls · 29/01/2011 07:59

Awful! Very dated.

BlackSwan · 29/01/2011 08:01

Nooo. Not this century.

onimolap · 29/01/2011 08:06

It's dated, because it exploded in popularity with Shirley Temple, so it was a teenage name in the 1950s, and there are lots one in their 70s.

On the "return of the Granny names" principle, it's probably due a come-back.

I like it, and it has good associations for me.

Expecting06112010 · 29/01/2011 08:46

No no no! very awful, shirley is honestly your favourite name?

shesparkles · 29/01/2011 08:51

I can't help thinking of Leslie Nielson when I hear that name "Don't call me Shirley" Wink

IngridBergmann · 29/01/2011 08:58

I was about to post that.

Your unborn child is speaking to you through Lesley Nielson.

Don't do it!

GRW · 29/01/2011 09:14

I don't dislike it, and agree it will probably cone back into fashion at some point. I am in my 40's and went to school with an Emily, and everyone thought that was an old ladies name and dated. It certainly doesn't have those associations now.

PuppyMonkey · 29/01/2011 09:19

It makes me think of Shirley from EastEnders, which is not ideal for a small baby. Although I always say my DD was the spit of Phil Mitchell as a newborn. So hey ho.

saffy85 · 29/01/2011 09:38

I automatically think of the sitcom "Desmonds". Brilliant programme. The wife was called Shirley. Love Shirley spoken with a Jamaican accent. Otherwise not so much tbh.

ShirleyKnot · 29/01/2011 09:42

Do it

IngridBergmann · 29/01/2011 09:43

Desomnds was GREAT.

I loved Desmonds.

I think it's pretty! Why not?

PlanetLizard · 29/01/2011 11:14

It's not for me. Sorry.

Hedwig3 · 29/01/2011 12:50

Great name.

TondelayoSchwarzkopf · 29/01/2011 12:55

You can't be serious.

Grin
LetThereBeRock · 29/01/2011 12:56

It's a terrible name.

52Girls · 29/01/2011 13:33

Just reminded me, it was Big Daddy's name!

tummytickler · 29/01/2011 13:51

Thank you Allie It is pretty! If you forget about the fact it is quite dated isn't it lovely?
I don't watch soaps so no idea who Shirley in EE is.
GRW Does that mean by the time she is 30 she will have a fashionable name Grin
I am surprised by the strong dislike actually.
Is it just because it sounds old?
Maybe when there are a few of them running around it will seem more current, and therefore more appealing?
I think a little Shirley would be cute, and it is quite grown up also.
I suppose we will have to agree to disagree Grin

Tummytickler, if you and DH like it obviously go for it. I'm not a fan either and I do watch eASTENDERS WHICH DOES NOT ENDEARE ONE TO THE NAME, (Doh - caps lock). But you could be right about the 30 year old with a fasionable name! Grin
