Shirley is my favourite name ever - I love it.
Dh has always said it is a bit close to dd2's name, but last night he said maybe that does not matter
So it is now a possibility. It is top of the list for me now I know dh would possibly use it. Dh prefers the other names on our list but could win him over i think.
So, what do you think?

I rather like it. My MIL's name. Recently you had a thread about Gladys and I posted that I had a great-aunt called Gladys. Apart from sisters called Joyce, Jean and Phyllis, there was another called Shirley. My great-aunt Shirley is wonderful and both she and my MIL were born in 1935. I think it's due for a revival - go for it.

I rather like Sheila, too...

IngridFletcher · 29/01/2011 16:26

Just reminds me of this Billy Bragg song:

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 29/01/2011 16:32

I love that song!

StarlightPrincess · 29/01/2011 16:36

BIG DADDY!

MissQue · 29/01/2011 16:42

Shirley not??? (well someone had to) Grin

BlackSwan · 30/01/2011 22:59

"I am serious. And don't call me Shirley." (that's for MissQue)

MrsBananaGrabber · 31/01/2011 00:57

My mothers name, please don't do it. Grin

tethersend · 31/01/2011 01:11

I love it.

Is DD2's name Pepsi?

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 31/01/2011 22:30

I've been thinking about this since I commented and Shirley has really, really grown on me.

I think you should go for it if you love it.

WestYorkshirePudding · 31/01/2011 22:40

Shirley is NOT a name due for a come-back!

AvaBanana · 01/02/2011 05:30

No

kreecherlivesupstairs · 01/02/2011 09:17

Horrible horrible horrible.

evamummy · 01/02/2011 10:02

I think Shirley suits a baby as well as an adult - it is a classic name, easy to spell and pronounce.

Just because it isn't 'fashionable' at the moment and some of us only know older Shirleys doesn't mean it won't suit your daughter - everyone who meets your dd will then associate Shirley with her Smile.

And I find it makes a refreshing change from all the popular trendy names at the moment - wouldn't life be boring if we all called our children Jack, Lily, Grace and Alfie...

nancythenaughtyfairy · 01/02/2011 10:19

Wow what a divided thread.

I like it!

ValiumSandwichTime · 01/02/2011 11:14

NO, yuck, along with Sheila. i know sisters younger than me called shirley and sheila. Their parents were clearly on drugs. Maybe when they are 60 their names wiill be fashionable. So they have that to look forward to!

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 01/02/2011 11:31

evamummy - what sense you speak.

I have a Nancy - 10 years ago, I'd've probably got the same response (though people are sometimes still quite negative about it, even though it is relatively popular these days).

I much prefer Shirley to Grace, Lily etc...

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 01/02/2011 11:35

And - my 5 year old daughter thinks that 'Lesley' is the prettiest name she's ever heard (and that's coming from a generation, of Evies, Lilys, Graces and Rubys etc). All names come back - isn't there a hundred or so year rule? 15 years ago, Ruby was terribly old fashioned sounding and look what happened there.

SE131975 · 01/02/2011 11:49

Sorry, I really do not like the name Shirley.

ValiumSandwichTime · 01/02/2011 11:52

I love the name Nancy. It's feisty though. Shirley is a drip.

hulabula · 01/02/2011 13:38

Another vote for Shirley - the name itself is feminine and elegant imo - and people will soon lose their 'associations' when they meet a Shirley today.

Shouldn't we encourage name diversity? Or do we want the OP to add yet another Grace or Lily (or other 'trendy' name) to the huge pool already...!

DesertOrchid · 01/02/2011 13:43

I like it. I wouldn't use it because with my surname it would sound like a cartoon character, but I think it's unusual and pretty. Makes me think of Anne Shirley aka Anne of Green Gables.

Tuschinski · 01/02/2011 15:23

Have to say I am really, really surprised at how many people hate the name. It's my name, never heard anything negative about it IRL. I don't love it but I certainly don't hate it, I like that there aren't too many of us around. In the book"cool names for babies" it's listed in the chapter "Names that nobody is cool enough to pull off" I really don't think it's that bad!

thereisalightanditnevergoesout · 01/02/2011 16:29

Wasn't the lead singer from Garbage called Shirley? Trying to think of cool Shirleys...

I can't see what's so awful about it, either. But then I've known some fabulous Shirleys, and I think I associate it with lovely people so perhaps that's why I like it.

wolfhound · 01/02/2011 16:33

We chose DS1's name because we really liked it and it was my grandad's name. It didn't seem a name we heard a lot. Now (3 yrs later) it's one of the most popular names around. You can't win with popularity, so pick the name you like. I think it's nice.

Aims80 · 01/02/2011 17:57

Shirley you can't be serious?

Not my taste!
