I really dont want to offend anyone but I am really conscious that sometimes people make assumptions about children just based on their names. Absolute honesty what are your thoughts on Joshua please??

I'm a teacher. I've taught three Joshuas and know one other. Two of them have ADHD, one was lovely, one was just normal. I don't love it or hate it, it's a bit meh for me. I prefer a stronger name myself. Josh is a bit wishy washy. Can't imagine that helps at all but you did ask Smile

It's just a name. Lots of people make assumptions about names but Joshua is just a regular, classic, non-offensive name. There are as many different types of Joshua as there are Joshuas.

It's no Ptolemy Nobbington-Smythe or Hepzhibah-Fallulah Japonica Dreamington.

crisptart · 27/01/2011 21:02

I think it's a normal name. Not chavvy, not posh, just an average popular name. I know loads of Joshua's, it seems a very popular name at the moment.

hester · 27/01/2011 21:18

I think it's really nice.

ValiumSandwichTime · 28/01/2011 00:05

I'd assume he was a teenager. I think the name is not used so much for babies any more.

WickedWitchSouthWest · 28/01/2011 00:12

It's ok, just average. Agree a bit effeminate too! There's 3 in my dd's reception class of 27...that would put me off as they're all called by their full name (first name and surname).

ShowOfHands · 28/01/2011 11:26

It was in the top 5/10 for years iirc.

I'm married to one and for a long time we haven't been out without somebody calling his name and a small boy answering. It seems to have had its day atm though. I've not seen or heard of a baby Joshua for a while. They're all school age.

52Girls · 28/01/2011 11:33

It's one name I have no real opinion on. It's not a very strong name, I suppose. (IMO)

evamummy · 28/01/2011 12:14

Joshua sounds quite girly imo and I don't like the shua at the end.

AllieW · 28/01/2011 13:27

I really like it. The only association I have is David & Ruth's son on The Archers!

mamsnet · 28/01/2011 13:28

Don't mind it per se but way too popular atm.

Tortington · 28/01/2011 13:29

i dont like it - but then ive known a couple and any josh ive met is a twonker

kerala · 28/01/2011 13:29

Perfectly nice name but totally overused to the extent it now blends into the crowds. Every class has at least one.

mrsunreasonable · 29/01/2011 07:21

Don't like it, sorry. Feels a bit wishy-washy and weak.

onimolap · 29/01/2011 08:02

I think it's a fantastic name: from a strong biblical character, and it works well for all ages (and passes "future career" tests),

sarahtigh · 01/02/2011 22:11

like onimolap I think its a good name its been around for centuries
strong biblical character no push over did what was right a role model actually has same hebrew root as jesus
easy to spell if you like it go for it personally don't like Josh though

medoitmama · 01/02/2011 22:16

Josh-u-a. Rachel off Friends.

gillybean2 · 02/02/2011 07:22

Far too many of them around already. No objections to the name iteself, but I wouldn't pick something that is so popular widely used currently.

othersideofchannel · 02/02/2011 11:19

I don't like it very much, especially the shortening Josh. Wouldn't travel well into other languages (where they'd say Yosh/ua).

ragged · 02/02/2011 11:23

It's over-popular in my mind, I have an aversion to it on that basis (which is pretty rich given I have an Isabel Blush... but then DH chose that for strong family reasons).

It also means Jesus, of course, and I wonder how many people realise that.

JamieLeeCurtis · 02/02/2011 13:42

Like it a lot. Prefer Joshua to Josh, which is a bit "hearty", but it was on my list
