i have this problem- am irish- partner not- he hates most irish names except the really common ones ( or ones I hate) I refuse to think about and I want kids to have irish name- Maybe I will name all my kids after nordic gods- may be easier

mathanxiety · 25/01/2011 23:23

Some good Irish names come from the Vikings - Raghnall and Somhairle for example.

We know we are having a boy and I'm debating between Milo and Shay .. if it was a girl it would have probably been Caitlin or Roisin.

This sites quite insteresting for Irish names. My 9 yr olds Niamh but shes not keen on it as she gets called Nee-am Ni-am. I printed this off now she likes$ it better. She has waste length blonde hair so its quite fitting

Orla, Keira, Eibhlean

gotmyhandsfull · 17/02/2011 22:42

I have a boy Francis, and 3 girls, Gracie, Oonagh and Caoimhe. Not one of them are called by their name, Doodles, A.C, OoMcOo and Diva.
Not what I had planned when naming them.
Thought I would share this as you are considering a couple of these names.

mummypontipine · 17/02/2011 22:47

I have a kiara and a brayden. How about a Manx Gaelic name? Ishbel for a girl or kerron for a boy?

Seoirsin, oona, aine, mairin, grainne, grayse.

Eoin, aodhan.

Eglu · 21/02/2011 10:39

My favourit Irish names ara Aoife and Oisin

recklesspixie · 24/02/2011 21:49

mathsanxiety my DH is Ruadhán, haven't met any other Ruadhán's so was surpised to find it on your list!
Am 11 weeks and we are considering Tiarnán for a boy and Aoibhín or Aoife for a girl, love Béibhín always have and I think Dáithí is so cute for a boy... Síbhéal is another nice unusual girl's name.

mathanxiety · 25/02/2011 18:46

I love those names, Recklesspixie. A cousin of mine has a little Aoibhín who is gorgeous. Sibéal always reminds me of the beautiful Dingle peninsula -- lovely classical name that's just as nice in Irish.

florapup · 25/02/2011 19:01

My DS is Declan. My husband is Irish but we chose the name Declan after watching 'Capital City' in the late 1980's - one of the characters was a Declan :)

Bradyboo · 25/02/2011 20:47

My husband is Irish and our DS is called Finnard. Never met another one!

ValiumSingleton · 25/02/2011 22:38

You can't go wrong with Declan. Very normal but not that many of them.

ValiumSingleton · 25/02/2011 22:41

ps knew a Ruadhán, he was the first vegan I ever met, and an eccentric musician. RecklessPixie, I love those names. Dáithí and Síbhéal. Blush is Sibeal pronounced Sheebale or see bale

mathanxiety · 26/02/2011 15:38

I think it's Shib-ALE.

PepsiPopcorn · 26/02/2011 18:25

I quite like all the names you've mentioned, especially Enya.

Lovely to see some Irish names on here that vary from Erin, Orla and Niamh for a change!

paulbrom · 27/02/2011 09:54

LOVE Clodagh! I wanted it for DD but DP refused :(

Cormac is lovely too.

pmouse · 04/03/2011 18:38

Having had a hard-to-prounounce Irish name for 35 years I recommend you go for one that's easy. I don't know how many times - yawn - I've had to spell it out over the phone and that's not to mention the attempts people have had at prounouncing it outside the UK when I've travelled. grr...

kirstie140913 · 07/03/2011 19:10

mine are shannon (normal, but not even really used as a name in Ireland!!)
Aoife (getting quite common now)
so this time we went for a something as unusual as we could find and actually liked - Tailte prononced talt-cha (female)not met another yet.

chipmonkey · 07/03/2011 20:21

I love Etain with a fada on the e and the a, so Ay-tawn.

mopsytop · 17/04/2011 16:10

What about Diarmuid instead of Dermot if you want it to be really Irish?

mopsytop · 17/04/2011 16:11

p.s. anything with a 'bh' in the middle is pronounced 'v', as in Siobhán is shovawn

chipmonkey · 17/04/2011 16:29

My friend has a Sibeal and I always wonder whether she got it from the waiting area in Holles St hospital where there is a memorial to the founder who was called Sibeal.

chipmonkey · 17/04/2011 23:57

By the way, those of you who can do fadas on your posts, how do you do it?
