Ooh, Irish names thread, my favourite(waves to Barbie!). DH is Irish and like you most of the good ones have been taken. Our son was sadly stillborn last June and we named him Malachy Aidan. Cormac, Ruairi and Cillian were also on our list, as was Saoirse for a girl. I don't really like Dermot, sorry. Maeve is lovely but its already been used in our family.

Good Luck x

clumsymumluckybaby · 24/01/2011 21:25

sorry to hear that Minione.it is a lovely name that you choose for him.

CockneySparra · 24/01/2011 21:32

Love Caoimhe, Roisin, Maeve and Saorise for a girl. Also Sorcha, Grainne, Orlaith.

Oisin, Dara and Cormac are fabulous for a boy.

How about Mairaed? (mar-ade) Of Aoife? (ee-fa), Niamh? (neve) Sinead? Ciara? I've always liked Mary-Kate.

How about Connor? Dillon? Sean? Patrick? There are loads!!

suzikettles · 24/01/2011 21:41

No one has mentioned Fergal or Fearghal. We would have had Fionnuala if we'd had a DD.

BarbieLovesKen · 24/01/2011 23:36

Grin Maryz.

Don't ever be tempted to call your baby Gobnait, IrishQueen.

skidd · 25/01/2011 14:54

I love Tadgh for a boy but spelling is tricky which is why we went for Malachy instead (live in England) but I still hanker after Tadgh (pronounced like Tiger without the -r)

walkinZombie · 25/01/2011 16:30

Siobhan, Niamh
(neeve)

ValiumSilverTongue · 25/01/2011 16:56

Didn't Amanda Brunker call her son Setanta? I think she did. If it wasn't her it mgiht have been Lorraine Keane. Confused

Most people will just thing, huh sports channel, so I wouldn't really.

Gobnait! lol. Bold girls used to have their name translated into Irish as Gobnait as a punishment for being cheeky!

ValiumSilverTongue · 25/01/2011 16:57

Tadhg ! not gh.

mathanxiety · 25/01/2011 18:16

Val - I knew a Gobnait (real name) growing up. Lovely girl, but wow, the name....

And yes, 'Tadhg' - tis indeed a tricky one.

I knew a family with a Concepta and a Dymphna (the school wags called her Hnimphna, pronounced through the nose) among other beauties. All my age or thereabouts..

TallulahdoesthehulainHawaii · 25/01/2011 18:45

I know a Concepta around my age, if not a bit younger (I'm 31). Her mother is Assumpta.

I had never heard of it before!

I love Sadhbh, really pretty. I love the name Thady, if DD had been a boy she would have had that name.

KenDoddsDadsDog · 25/01/2011 20:44

I know a couple of Dymphnas, it makes me think of fairies for some reason.

mathanxiety · 25/01/2011 22:56

Daphne makes me think fairies too. How strange is that?
