Sigh-Anne.

I thought the woman was mispronouncing Sian, then saw the name written down. Sigh-Anne. I mean, what on earth...?

the other was a little boy called Ragen. As in Ronald Regan, but Ragen. Ragen? I am not a name snob, but I do draw the line at deliberately misspelling surnames and then using them as a first name! Grin

i lived on a main road frequented by long distance lorries..there was a layby by my house which was often filled with ND lorries at night (ie drivers slept there) . but it was next to a 24 hr garage which also catered for them..no normal magazines, only hardcore porn Hmm so i could never get Heat or Company (as i read back then!) but i could get Bondage Granny (if i so desired..i didn't). They were very unusual porn titles, i have to say...ND drivers must have very unique tastes.

PommePoire · 25/01/2011 22:34

lololizzy re:the 'unique tastes' hence, the 'hairy handed truckers' who occasionally invade these boards looking for thrills on a Friday night!

I once taught a girl named Harley Davidson. I love the Afro-Carribean adjectival names such as Precious. I also taught a beautiful girl named 'Giveness' Oh, and her not quite so beautiful cousin, Tyson-King Surname. He was very exacting that you didn't miss off the 'King' when calling the register. My all time favourite, from 10 years of secondary teaching, is Misty Tufts.

One of the models (10yo boy) in the new Mini Boden catalogue is called, um, Boden

Pippaandpolly · 25/01/2011 22:37

I went to school with a Domino. I actually kind of love it. I hope she grew up to be a bond girl/villain.

lololizzy · 25/01/2011 22:38

really the drivers come on MN?!

SecretSquirrel193 · 25/01/2011 22:39

And this is why people need childhood pets.. Time to get all the crappy names out of your system before you lumber poor humans with them!

bulby · 25/01/2011 22:55

Bronte is quite a common name for girls in Yorkshire. Common as in popular those ones I've come across have been very nice.

anonymosity · 25/01/2011 23:31

Clamidia does it for me. Awful.

Saggyoldclothcatpuss · 25/01/2011 23:36

A girl I was in the mat home with wanted to call her son Kregan! Unfortunately, her surname started with a K so she couldn't!
DS went to school with a Joop and a Pele, ( both boys)
I once met identical twins called Melissa and Clarissa.
I have also heard of a Bobina (girl)! Confused

I used to work in a Pizza Express as a student, and there was a family of regulars who used to bring their three kids in. The eldest boy was Skye, the middle girl was Ocean. They used to call the baby girl Mer and I never caught what it was short for until she was naughty one day and the father sharply reprimanded her with the Full Name Treatment: Mermaid Shock

Bonkers rich hippies, so probably not that weird at their schools, but pretty odd in my rural Norfolk town at the time :)

misspollysdolly · 26/01/2011 00:07

There is a Miffy in DS's class - it's actually, officially Millefeuille, meaning 'A thousand layers' but no-one bothers with the correct spelling (nor the meaning, I should imagine Grin)...!

When DD was at playgroup there was a Sparkly and also a Sizzle, but we'll let her off - her name was actually Cecilia but her sibling(s) couldn't say it correctly and so the name Sizzle stuck!

I went to school with a girl called February...

I used to look after a little boy called Martin Luther; his surname was King Grin I think his parents must have had high expectations of him

anonymosity · 26/01/2011 00:38

Actually, in my son's preschool there is a "Golden" which isn't too bad when you say it.

namechangedofcourse · 26/01/2011 01:01

Amaryllis? A beautiful name, actually. Especially if you know your Theocritus, Virgil and Milton. Oh, and a lovely Cacini madrigal (fab version sung by Anreas Scholl -look it up on youtube)

Amaryllis, my lovely one,
do you not believe, o my heart's sweet desire,
That you are my love?
Believe it thus: and if fear assails you,
Doubt not its truth.
Open my breast and see written on my heart:
Amaryllis, Amaryllis, Amaryllis,
Is my beloved.

Yes, I'm a ponce, but I'd rather be a ponce than a philistine Smile

Piggles · 26/01/2011 02:55

I went to school/college with kids called Salem, Freshwater and Badger.

I know of a little boy called Mannii - which I thought was a bit of a weird one.

anonymosity · 26/01/2011 05:13

I rather liked that - thank you for posting it namechangedofcourse

Melty · 26/01/2011 07:29

I know someone who called her cat Mylo, and then called her PFB Mylo too. Poor toddler doesnt know if he's being yelled at or if its the cat. Baby number 2 is due shortly. I await with interest.
I also know someone who called his little boy Sean Thomas. (Is Irish, but Sean is Irish for John)

kodokan · 26/01/2011 07:46

Perpetua and Helvetica - yes, after the typefaces.

skyberry · 26/01/2011 08:31

I know somebody who called there child Gypsy-Lee and there's a Giles at my sons playgroup. All I can think of is farmer Giles when I hear his name (hmm)

Quenelle · 26/01/2011 10:20

I used to know a boy called Yorick when I was a teenager. He was from a bit of a hippy background, ever such a gentle bloke.

I heard some years later that he was killed in a car accident Sad

BuzzLightBeer · 26/01/2011 10:29

Some of these names are just daft, but those of you laughing at names that are perfectly normal in other countries just look like nobbers.

NormaSknockers · 26/01/2011 10:48

I know a little girl called Bubbles. Yes, really.

I also dealt with a customer at work who was called Youthland....

NormaSknockers · 26/01/2011 10:49

One name I heard not that long ago was Herb (may have been short for Herbert?) and I actually really liked that, wouldn't have said no to that one myself.

JenaiMarrHePlaysGuitar · 26/01/2011 10:52

I agree, Buzz.

I like slightly unusual names - nothing wrong with twoapenny names either if that's your bag.

jellyrolly · 26/01/2011 11:00

I was going to be called Dante if I had been a boy. I would probably have owned up to Dan.
