Sigh-Anne.

I thought the woman was mispronouncing Sian, then saw the name written down. Sigh-Anne. I mean, what on earth...?

the other was a little boy called Ragen. As in Ronald Regan, but Ragen. Ragen? I am not a name snob, but I do draw the line at deliberately misspelling surnames and then using them as a first name! Grin

Lots of american cousins have silly names.

We have a Thurry, Jet, Micayah, Van.

What is going to happen when they grow up and have real jobs? Possible in the media, or politics?

Actually I guess Barack is an unusual name so maybe a silly name does not rule you out from holding high office.

Neasden

LOL at Miffy!! My DD loves Miffy but I don't think I would call a child that!

I have heard of a Skye-Blue and Misty - both girls I think but you never know....

babysickstinks · 25/01/2011 20:40

DH has taught a Fox, Red and Cub (all brothers)

Also been through the school are k-see (girl) Draco, Senna, Loki, Keyara-bo, Angel-onassis (sp) and a Priscilla who has always been called Prissy for short.

DH doesn't teach in a very classy area.

loopyloo82 · 25/01/2011 20:44

My mum has taught a Vodafone and a Toffee Wolf.
Honestly.

GnomeDePlume · 25/01/2011 20:47

I think the new names are great, so much better than when I was at school and the choice of names could be written on the back of a postage stamp.

I think that Hebe is the plant group Veronica so perhaps not silly at all.

lololizzy · 25/01/2011 20:47

i think Miffy 'may' be short for Myfanwy. I know a Fox..but Vodafone??!!!!!!!
have , however, met a Vienetta. (or however the dessert is spelt)

Takver · 25/01/2011 20:50

I know a chap called Larch (also know - adults - called Willow, Aspen, & Oaks).

I have begun to wonder how many of these mad baby names are simply misunderstandings since my mother misheard my SiL's new baby's name over the phone & then went and told all her friends he was called Pond.

He actually has a perfectly normal name Grin. But as my mum says, if you can be called River (Phoenix), why not Pond . . .

BlessedAssurance · 25/01/2011 20:58

i work with superporn,i still can't call her that,i just call her super,,

stickylittlefingers · 25/01/2011 21:00

I came across a little boy called Meadow a couple of months ago. Fun when he goes for a hair cut I'd imagine - went to mow a Meadow... tho he had quite a long bob, so perhaps he doesn't like that particular "joke" too much.

MoldyWarp · 25/01/2011 21:00

ds5 has a shakespearean name
people usually say 'isn't it a girls name' followed by 'hmm' when i say it is shakespearean

scrumblemum · 25/01/2011 21:12

when I was pregnant with twins my DH met someone called Rhapsody and thought that would be a great name for one of our girls! I initially thought he was joking but sadly no.... My brother suggested calling the other one Melody.

Sidge · 25/01/2011 21:28

I went to 6th form college with Kestrel, who I believe had brothers Peregrine and Falcon. They were so cool, especially given the rest of us were called Louise, Emma, Steve, Jonathan, Kerry, Jane, Sarah, Mark and suchlike.

I know of Armarni (sic), J-D, Trinity, Reon, Flux and Thankful.

lololizzy · 25/01/2011 21:30

Thankful!!! maybe the parents waited a long time to conceive?!

Sidge · 25/01/2011 21:35

Thankful's parents were from the Caribbean I think it was, they seem to use very different 'categories' of names there.

She was a cute baby, I'm in no doubt they were thankful to have her!

SqueezyDiva · 25/01/2011 21:50

My daughter's friend is called Silhouette. I quite like it Blush

Last word on Bronte. From the Irish Prunty or O'Prunty. Patrick Prunty emigrated from Ireland to study at Cambridge ( not Oxford, from memory) before taking holy orders and moving to HAworth. Rest is history.

Bronte is a made up name. He added the umlaut for special effect. Social climbing/aspiration is nothing new!

Linton or Heathcliff, anyone? Only waiting on the Hollywood blockbuster I suspect.

BellaMagnificat · 25/01/2011 21:54

Flux? As in the bloody Shock

lololizzy · 25/01/2011 21:55

Cameo

bambiandthumper · 25/01/2011 21:58

My BF lives in Connecticut and in her DD's yearbook there was, among others (all girls here): Carter, Ciel, Seal, Ann Abbott, Chase, Talbot, Ryan, Payton.

I also know of an Aqua and a Storm (brother and sister.

NorbertDentressangle · 25/01/2011 21:58

I'm not 100% sure on this but I think I heard a little boy being called Morrissey today Confused Shock

Psammead · 25/01/2011 22:01

My (non-English) friend confided in me that were she to have a boy next time around, she would call him Zhin (I presumed). Sort of like 'seen' but a bit more Zedy.

I figured it was a foreign name and said how nice, I haven't heard it before and she seemed suprised. I asked how it was spelt and she said 'S-E-A-N like Zhin Connery, you know?'

I told her that it was normally pronounced like 'Shaun' but she was having none of it.

lololizzy · 25/01/2011 22:04

Norbert!! i love your name!! i used to be NorbertDentressangle on another forum. gotta love those big red lorries Wink

NorbertDentressangle · 25/01/2011 22:09
