You guys have been very helpful with helping me decide on my boys name but my bump is yellow so I'd like your comments on our girls name: Ailsa Rose

We really want a pretty and slightly unusual name (i.e. not Isla which is very popular here at the moment) with Scottish routes and this is our favourite- followed by Iona. I really really love Ailsa as it is so bonnie. I worry it may be a little old fashioned but old names are having a come back and I'd say this is more traditional than old lady like! I also have a tendancy to shorten names and am not sure what this what shorten too?

I really love Ailsa, always have. I don't think it sounds old fashioned, just different and unexpected. I'd probably call her Aily as a nickname.

I agree, Ailsa is beautiful and unusual. I also like Elsa (nn Elsie) but that's more popular and I have to say I like Ailsa better... not sure about nns though. I really dislike Al/Ally, but what about something sounding like Ailsie?

Pinkjenny · 19/01/2011 11:32

I do like Ailsa, but it reminds me of the character in Home and Away . Although she was a kind soul, so not necessarily a bad thing.

Beautiful. My DD also has middle name "Rose". Make sure you name a rose after her (www.johnlewis.com/230453782/Product.aspx?source=14798), and there are so many rose-themed things you can buy for little girls...

BlueChampagne · 19/01/2011 13:20

I think Ailsa is due a come-back (after Isla and Iona) so be ahead of the game! Rose is a fine name, and they sound lovely together.

JojoMags · 19/01/2011 13:29

Ailsa Rose is lovely. Really timeless and pretty. Out of pure nosiness, what is your boys name?

CalaLilly · 19/01/2011 13:30

JojoMags, it's Rory Douglas. Was toying between that and Ewan James Smile

Ailsa is going to be the name of my next (as yet un-conceived!) baby if it is a girl. If DH agrees.
Ummm, ok, so it might not happen for me, but I do love the name!

HelenaRose · 20/01/2011 16:15

Is it pronounced "ail-sah" or "al-sah"? Or, er, neither?

mathanxiety · 20/01/2011 16:56

I love your names. Beautiful, all three of them. Scottish and gorgeous, and not a bit old fashioned - I agree Ailsa is more 'traditional'.

Aily might be a nice nn.

CalaLilly · 21/01/2011 09:36

Helena Rose, it's pronounced Ail-sah

Thanks everyone! You've helped me confirm that this will be baby's name if they are a girl. I can't wait to find out!
