ok, not a cheery topic, but I've noticed that there have been quite a few threads on here about name regrets and people wanting to change their DCs names... and it's got me wondering what the names that people regret are? are there any names that crop up more regularly than others?

my son has never forgiven me for his middle name which is stacey as in stacey keach

Deciduousblonde · 11/01/2011 01:31

I used to regret naming my eldest Rachael. It was 21 years ago and everyone else was naming their daughters Amy, Lauren, Chantelle & Rosie.

I really wanted Rosie, but there were 4 others on the ward! now I'm glad I chose her name because there are relatively few Rachaels of her age in our area :)

BuntyPenfold · 11/01/2011 09:24

Oh, I like Rachael!
I know a male Stacey too, he must be 24 or so (wild guess).

I regret being persuaded into using William.

AlpinePony · 11/01/2011 09:55

FOF blames hormones for saddling her son with Tyler. My SIL asked her "what were you thinking?" (ever tactful)!

Helenastar · 11/01/2011 10:02

My middle name, Rhonwen!!!!!
it was my Dads choice, and he wonders why I never use it.
If my Mum had her way I would have been called Victoria Jane, but no my Dad poked his nose in, Rhonwen for gods sake!!

jacquiel · 11/01/2011 10:10

My DS hates that he got called Moses
It is shortened to Mo and although when he was little people said it was a girls name (short for Maureen) since watching Simpsons and the Moe in that and the athlete Mo Farah, it is not so wierd.
It is an old family name, and i was having a bit of a weird time at the time!
I wanted Eric (there is another Eric in the class too) but DH hated it but would have had Erica for a girl!

smother · 11/01/2011 15:41

So I've been looking back at past threads and some of the most commonly regretted/changed girls' names seem to me to be Eve (or variations of) and Martha - they've cropped up more than once - why is this so???

OddBodd · 11/01/2011 16:28

Because they are awful names I guess! I think people chose unusual names thinking it sounds cute or original, they then get used, they become really popular and people realise that it just isn't a nice sounding name now it's now quite so 'unique'.

Too many people don't actually 'hear' the sound of the name but just like it because it is the latest celeb's kid's name or character in a book. I mean seriously Martha???! Honest to God what a frumpy and unattractie name.

OddBodd · 11/01/2011 16:29

unattractive^^

OddBodd · 11/01/2011 16:29

That said, my ds' middle name is Steven (dh's choice) and I wish I had stuck to my guns and forced Stephen spelling.

KnittingRocks · 11/01/2011 16:30

I don't think Martha is actually too bad in comparison to some of the god awful names that kids get saddled with nowadays in the quest to be 'unique'!

LADYBOAK · 11/01/2011 16:32

My husband middle name is Digby !!!

OddBodd · 11/01/2011 16:34

True some of them are truly bloody awful. DS has a Honey-Bell in his class. Hmm

ApertureScience · 11/01/2011 16:34

Well I've just changed DD's name today from Eve (Anna or Eve thread) we really felt like it didn't suit her, but also it is really really popular where I am (didn't realise how popular till after we named her) I think its especially popular where I live as I don't run into nearly as many of the other top 10 names. Thats our reasons anyway :)

waitwhat · 11/01/2011 16:36

In my sons class there is a boy called FavouriteHmm

nickelbabysnatcher · 11/01/2011 16:38

my poor PFB DS will be saddled with Graham as a middle name... (family heirloom)
and any 2nd DD will have Alexandra as a middle name, cos that's DH's choice (he got 2nd girls' middle name as a comproise Wink ). It's not a horrid name, but it will be pronounced differently by his family (southerners) and mine (northerners)

this is all theoretical, of course...

OddBodd · 11/01/2011 16:39

Favourite???????! What in Gay hell are these parent's thinking?! Let's hope he is an only child or else his name may seriously kick off some sibling rivalry!

ApertureScience · 11/01/2011 16:40

I don't think Eve is an awful name btw, it's been my favourite name since I was a teenager. I think its because we were already wobbling with the name that popularity became an issue, wasn't trying hard to be unique Hmm I don't think it matters with a name you truly love for your child.

Pinkjenny · 11/01/2011 16:41

My dd's middle name is Paige. I've gone off it, tbh. Glad it's only her middle name, and obv could be a lot worse.

KERALA1 · 11/01/2011 16:44

Aperture good call re Eve. One third of DD's class mates are called some version of this name. Perfectly decent name just crazily over popular.

CJMommy · 11/01/2011 16:46

DD's middle name is Martha and we love it Smile

I knew a boy at school who was very unfortunate and was called Gideon, when he turned 18 he changed is name to Eric FFS ERIC!!!! I'm not sure what one is worse.

Leaf, Trevor, Jesus, Sinbad, Colin, Apple, Fox, Flower, Roger, TreyC - God awful names

SummerRain · 11/01/2011 16:55

I don't regret dd's name... it was a name that dp and i both thought of independantly and it felt right and does suit her. But it is bloody popular ans there's a girl in the class below her who'll be in her room for most of her time at primary who shares the name. I gave her a middle name i loved as well though and will be more than happy for her to use that if she gets sick of her first name when she's older.

Her name is Sarah Abigail for the record.

alypaly · 11/01/2011 16:58

thanks bunty i loved it at the time. is it your friends first or middle name. he thinks he is the only one in the world and would like it removed off his birth certificate
