Gladiators, ready!...

upamountain · 06/01/2011 23:09

Knew one (american).Don't like it.

cece · 06/01/2011 23:09

Awful

ValiumTinselton · 06/01/2011 23:10

nO, it's aggressive. Hunting, Hunted, Hunter.... no. SO don't like that.

What about Victor (victorious in the hunt).

I don't like names like Parker, Baker etc though.

ShowOfHands · 06/01/2011 23:10

It's really very bad indeed.

TmiEdward · 06/01/2011 23:12

My cousins son is Hunter, but then they are American, so you can forgive them the bad taste...

KangarooCaught · 06/01/2011 23:14

Apart from the welly connection, it's one of those names I secretly like but would never use. Popular in the USA amongst those who also go for Ryder, Stone & Tate

cece · 06/01/2011 23:15

Hunter also has bad possible cruel nn.

Now Victor I like!

KangarooCaught · 06/01/2011 23:16

[waves to my redneck cousins who do indeed have children with these names]

Meglet · 06/01/2011 23:16

Would be cool as a middle name. Not for a first name, too macho.

NeverlandOfFun · 06/01/2011 23:17

AWFUL. Really harsh and just not even nice meaning behind it. It's truly horrid.

bubalooo · 06/01/2011 23:20

Ok ok. Does it sound too yobbish?

sammac · 06/01/2011 23:30

My dad's name ( in his 70s) and other family members. Given as middle name and used as given name. Was their granny's maiden name and as was tradition, given as middle name. Also my brother and nephew's middle name. Never encountered another non-family person- except for obvious Gladiator ( which my dad secretly enjyed being referred to )

Highlandgirl · 07/01/2011 02:27

I know a Hunter...he's lovely.

I really quite like it...not yobbish at all Grin

Rhubarbgarden · 07/01/2011 08:37

Could scupper his chances of ever being a conservationist.

Deciduousblonde · 07/01/2011 09:32

I actually like it :)

ShowOfHands · 07/01/2011 09:32

It's not yobbish. It's an American surname type name. Like Brandon, Carson, Tyler etc. Somebody said rednecks further up the thread and while it's not nice to stereotype and I try not to do it, yes that's what sprang to mind. My American friend would say they're 'dumb jock' names though. Hunter and his friends Carter and Todd spend their free time smashing empty beer cans into their heads and grunting 'take one for the team y'all'. Oh look I do like stereotyping after all.

If you like it, use it. But it's not the nicest name for a little newborn baby boy.

bubalooo · 07/01/2011 16:06

I think of it as being like Mason, Tyler, Bailey etc which are all popular. It's on the list but I don't think i could risk it in case he hates his name.

Eglu · 07/01/2011 16:09

I like the name but came across a teenager recently who was called this and he was weedy and meek. I think the name needs someone strong and well built, and you can't guarantee that.

MistletoeMush · 07/01/2011 16:18

Didn't it used to be a popular name in the UK? I might be wrong but I don't really associate it with American. Not sure if I like it or not. Quite like the sound of it but not sure about the meaning. I suspose one could 'hunt' for a positive thing eg hunt for the truth, hunt for justice etc, its tricky to think of good associations though.

MaElsie · 14/01/2011 16:10

It could be a cool name, but only for a particular kind of guy. A thin / weedy / geeky guy couldn't get away with it

ilovebooks · 14/01/2011 16:21

We were thinking of this name too, with Hunter S Thompson in mind.

But unsure now...

Nightstar · 14/01/2011 19:28

Sooo American.

Dont use anything that rhymes with the C word!

If you love it then use for middle name

gallicgirl · 14/01/2011 19:33

It's a surname. Anything which is a profession is a surname and I really don't like it as a first name. Your choice though.
