Hi, I'm new on here but would like some opinions / suggestions.

We have a dd Madeleine Jane and our surname is very short, one syllable.

We are not finding out the sex so need a boys and girls choice.

Names I like -

Emilia Violet (my fave I think)
Isobel Violet
Elisabeth Violet
Imogen Violet
Olivia Violet (maybe)

Jacob Matthew (would probs get Jake)
Isaac James / Joseph
Oliver James / Joseph

Dp likes

Livvy (Olivia)
Tilly (Matilda)
Mya

Oliver Joseph

I really want Violet as the middle name after my gran, dp wants Joseph after his grandad.

I don't mind Olivia but not so keen on Livvy as nn. I quite like Tilly and think Matilda is cute but not so good as a teenage or adults name, I hate Mya.

Dp does not particularly like any of my choices, although he doesn't seem to mind Imogen. We both quite like Oliver but it's popularity puts us off and I prefer Jacob or Isaac, he said Isaac was chavvy.

Any opinions or suggestions much appreciated!

Love oliver and isaac.

Love isobel and violet

With you on Emilia Violet - I love names whcih are pretty but also have family resonance and meaning. All your boys names are cute (no help -sorry!).

BelligerentGhoul · 06/01/2011 22:26

Love Isobel Violet or Imogen Violet.

I like both Isaac and Oliver.

ShoppingDays · 06/01/2011 22:30

I like all your suggestions but I really dislike Tilly and Livvy.

Maddikins · 06/01/2011 22:38

I like almost equally all of the names I have chosen. I think I slightly prefer Emilia as I also like Milly/Millie as a nn (although not sure if Madeleine (also gets Maddie) and a Milly is a bit much. I do like Olivia and Imogen, but not as much as the other names I like.

Jacob / Jake or Isaac are my fave boys names but dp doesn't like either, dp quite liked Oscar but imo it doesn't sound so good as an adults name and also my bf has chosen this for her baby.

The fact dp likes Mya, which imo is nothing like the names I like is making me think we might struggle to agree on a name.

I like all your names.

What about Josephine Violet? Violet Josephine?

Komondor · 07/01/2011 16:06

I like all your choices except Isaac.

With the girls names, I prefer your DP suggestions as I love Livvy, Tilly and Mya.

Deciduousblonde · 07/01/2011 16:23

I love Emilia Violet..I think that is the best combination of girls names on your list. She might end up being called Em or Emmie though? if you like that thought, go for it!

I don't like Livvy or Tilly either, ShoppingDays.

For the boy I prefer Isaac James or Isaac Joseph. I wouldn't have OJ as initials, so Oliver would be a no-no if James or Joseph have to be the middle name. Oliver Matthew sounds & looks nice :)

Maddikins · 07/01/2011 20:54

I think Emilia Violet is still my fave and I like Em, Emmie or Millie.

I def don't want Tilly/Matilda.

I think girls names are easier as I can come up with quite a few I like whereas I'm really struggling with boys names and Dp hasn't come up with anything.

Hello *Maddikins and welcome to MN Smile Have you joined the MN antenatal club for the month you are due yet?

Anyway....

Emilia Violet (my fave I think)- Nice, but she may have to spell it out a lot as people may hear it as Amelia.
Isobel Violet - Nice but Isobel is very popular
Elisabeth Violet - love
Imogen Violet - love
Olivia Violet (maybe) - love but very popular

Could you have Violet or Violetta?

Jacob Matthew (would probs get Jake) - ok
Isaac James / Joseph - ok, but Isaac was very popular about 10 years ago
Oliver James / Joseph - lovely, but again very popular

Dp likes

Livvy (Olivia) - Olivia is nice, don't like Livvy though.
Tilly (Matilda) - Again love Matilda but not keen on Tilly, bit too frilly.
Mya - not keen.

Tamasine · 09/01/2011 10:59

I have an Isaac, am v amused your DH thinks its chavvy - I've not had that before!! It has the potential I agree, if you decide to spell it Izak or some other amazing variant...!!

I also keep reading on here about how it was v popular 10 years ago... I'm not sure why, if anything it is at it's most popular now (and is about the 40 mark I think) - see

www.babynames.co.uk/meaning_origin_name_Isaac.htm

Anyway from your list I think all your girls names are lovely - and out of your boys names I really like Isaac (obviously) and also Jacob.

mathanxiety · 09/01/2011 20:25

Emilia Violet - nice, goes well with Madeleine.
Isobel Violet - Isobel is extremely popular and the Twilight phenomenon so I would say no.
Elisabeth Violet - LOVE
Imogen Violet - I dislike Imogen. It suggests frumpiess to me.
Olivia Violet - Lovely, although Olivia is very popular. Liv is another possible nn.

Jacob Matthew - Jacob very popular.
Isaac James / Joseph - LOVE - how is Isaac chavvy? Isaac goes well with Madeleine.
Oliver James / Joseph - Oliver is very popular but lovely and lovely with Madeleine.

Livvy (Olivia) - I prefer Liv as a nn
Tilly (Matilda) - Prefer Tilda nn
Mya (Cha and Mya are old Cork characters from a radio show in Ireland. Mya is a nn for Jeremiah in SW Ireland) I dislike Maya too.

Matilda and Madeleine sound lovely together. They are a pair but not matchy. Olivia and Madeleine are also lovely together. (Madeleine is a gorgeous name)

Oliver Joseph - nice

Others have suggested Josephine, which I love and think it would go very well with Violet as a mn and sound lovely with sister Madeleine.

readywithwellies · 09/01/2011 20:29

Agree with mathanxiety - Olivia can be shortened to Liv rather than Livvy.

cowboylover · 09/01/2011 20:50

Another agree with mathanxiety.

My friends Olivia is called Oli.

Maddikins · 09/01/2011 21:23

Tamasine, I totally don't get how on earth my dp thinks Isaac is chavvy! Especially when he then suggested Mya, which no offence to anyone, but I think is a bit chavvy and just not very nice. I think Isaac goes well with Madeleine and then he could have his Joseph mn, I'll have to work on him!

I did think about the Emilia / Amelia thing but although very similar I prefer Emilia and we already have the whole Madeline, Madelaine thing now with dd so I don't really mind.

I havent seen Twilight so didn't realise about the Isobel thing, might avoid that then.

Out of all the names dp and I only agree on Olivia (also like Liv and Oli as nn) and Oliver. He doesn't mind Imogen but I'm not as keen on it, and I love Emilia. I like Josephine and a few other girls names but these are my faves.

Love Emilia and Jacob. Not kin on middle names.

COCKadoodledooo · 10/01/2011 19:38

From your list I like Elisabeth and Imogen. Also like pp suggested, had you considered Josephine Violet?

Like all your boy choices too.
