invented names seem to meet with universal mumsnret disapproval . if there had been a mumsnet in ye olde times would these now main stream names have been rubbished and thus consigned to the dustbin of history eg
vanessa as invented by swift for his lover
olivia and miranda -shakespeare
pamela
araminta
allegra
shirley as a girls name
many of the belle/bella names eg clarabel

and i'm sure there are others

are there any modern inventions which will stand the test of time or we as a generation more set in our ways and more ready to condemn innovation

All names have been 'invented' at some time, haven't they?

exactly poppy daisy but yet anyone who comes up with a new idea ,new spelling , new coinage is slated on mumsnet as chav etc

The names you list have all been around for 100+ years.

There were many other coinings which didn't stand the test of time (eg some virtue names, anything cited on Horrible Histories Victorian school register).

There doesn't seem to be much record of what people thought of the failed neologisms or the early adopteds of those that survived; wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if there were bemused chunterings.

I think the real point here is that those names have stood the test of time.

Lots have been binned back in history or fallen out of fashion at present.

I think the mumsnet lot are a good indication of how the masses feel at this point in time, and I'm sure they/we would be completely out of touch in 100 years. Though some names will always stay. I think its unlikely that many of the 'new' names will last such a test.

Not strictly relevant but IMO all the names yo mention are horrible.

yes the names i mentioned have been around a long time but they were once new coinages and yes they are no longer to everyone's taste but they have all except araminta been popular names over the last century.

for another name popular at the moment and probably a shakespearean misspelling think imogen .

can you imagine the mutterings when swift first used vanesssa as a name for his lover. i'm pretty certain it would have been laughed at and looked down upon .

The "Gone With The Wind" names have also stood the test of time and use.

But looking only at the successful coinings gives only a fraction of the picture.
