Think we've decided... Kasper James

Fairly sure we're going to call DS1, due later this month, Kasper James + 2 syllable surname.

What do you think? Any other thoughts on middle names?

Previous choice was Xander (DP's favourite) but I vetoed it.

LOVE Casper James.

not so much Kasper with a k.

darleneconnor · 03/01/2011 01:44

boys names beginning with a k have a certain whiff to them iykwim

babynoname · 03/01/2011 01:57

No I don't! Could you elaborate? :)

Sazisi · 03/01/2011 01:59

Not sure about the 'whiff', but I prefer it with a C... Why are you spelling it with a K?

babynoname · 03/01/2011 02:04

No good reason, we just both seem to prefer it. We know another little Casper so perhaps it's us subconsciously wanting it to be different to his name? DP says he thinks it makes the name more "grown up". Not sure I agree either way but I guess he means in reference to the ghost being spelt with a C. Grin

I suppose I (snobbishly Blush) assume the parents can't spell when I see names spelled wrong differently

babynoname · 03/01/2011 02:13

AFAIK it is a legitimate spelling of the name, more popular in Germany?

Still undecided as to which spelling we prefer really. Casper or even Caspar might be a better spelling for us as it is the Persian spelling (my background).

Fairly sure it´s Kaspar over here tbh.

Like Caspar though & it sounds fantastic with James.

beanlet · 03/01/2011 09:24

Like the name, but the k is only acceptable if you are actually German. Otherwise it looks kitschy - Krispy Kreme Donuts kitschy. Don't.

belgo · 03/01/2011 09:31

Xander is lovely, especially short for Alexander.

Agree that it should be Casper with a C. Spelling it with a K will not make it a different name to the Casper you already know.

SecretNutellaFix · 03/01/2011 09:33

If you want to make it a bit different there is always Gaspar?

TheBolter · 03/01/2011 09:37

Caspar yes. Kasper no. It chavifies the name.

LetThereBeRock · 03/01/2011 09:37

It's gorgeous,and while I'm not generally fond of K names,I love this and it's a legitimate spelling,and how the,German,Kasper I know spells his name.

I prefer it with the K actually.

ShoppingDays · 03/01/2011 09:44

Nice, but definitely with a C not a K.

kreecherlivesupstairs · 03/01/2011 09:45

Only with a C.

hippipotamiHasLost92lbs · 03/01/2011 09:48

I love Casper, but with a C. I agree that you should really only spell it with a K if you are German or have German somewhere in your lineage. Otherwise it looks too try-hard, too 'keen to be different'. And, like the Krispy Kreme it comes across as a wee bit naff.

hippipotamiHasLost92lbs · 03/01/2011 09:49

oh, plus, he will be known as 'CasperwithaK' for all of his life, as most people (unless he moves to a German speaking country) will assume it is with a C.

Christmasbelle · 03/01/2011 09:51

I love Kasper with a K. I am not normally a fan of alternative/unpopular spellings but in this case I am totally with you. I must say, I also love the name Xander. Kasper (with a K), Felix and Xander were all on my shortlist for a boy Grin

EricNorthmansMistress · 03/01/2011 09:55

Caspar is nice, it looks right, and fits with your background. Unless you are persian/german, don't do Kasper.

Lamorna · 03/01/2011 09:57

Only with a C. Why do you want him to have a lifetime of having to correct people? I might well assume that the parents couldn't spell!

JiltedJohnsJulie · 03/01/2011 10:07

Both Xander and Casper are so much nicer than Kasper. Agree with darlene about the whiff.

hulabula · 03/01/2011 10:10

A Kasper is a clown/buffon in German. It is a well known word for someone silly.

mybootsaremuddy · 03/01/2011 10:18

I know a 10yr old Caspar and a 6yr old Casper. I quite like it with an a. Think it goes great with James.

To me it just dosent look right starting with a K, For some reason i think it makes the name seem quite harsh.

babynoname · 03/01/2011 13:59

Thanks for the comments!

The more I think about it the more inclined I am to spell it with a C. Hippi, you make a good point about him being KasperwithaK.

Caspar is the closest to the original name in Persian (my background) and now we are thinking perhaps this is the way to go... but then will he be CasparwithanAattheend or CasparwithadoubleA?! Grin Tricky! We both really like the double A.

The Krispy Kreme comments made me lol! I don't want to do that to him, I totally take the point. Thinking perhaps that as we are not German we should leave the K alone (also have read about it being something to do with clowns/Punch & Judy-esque things, as you mention hulabula).

Xander was vetoed because it is too close to my brother's name (Alexander) and we don't want to name him "after" my brother because he is not the best role model in the world. Also he will be born very close to, if not on, my brother's birthday, which makes it even more of a no-no to me! But otherwise, yes, lovely name.

I absolutely love it spelt Caspar!
