Jude

What do people think of Jude for a boy?
My plus points: begins with a J, which I like, but not as popular as Joshua, Jacob etc.
I like that it has one syllable, feels quite 'strong'.
Negatives: Jude Law. 'Hey Jude'. Could be girly? (As in short for Judith?)
Am wavering...

I think Jude is a lovely name.
Only negative I can see is that it has been getting more popular in recent years - but not THAT popular that you'll end up with 3 in a class...

MissBeehivingUnderTheMistletoe · 29/12/2010 21:44

I have a Jude so I obviously like it!

hackneyzoo · 29/12/2010 21:45

I love it (am biased, my DS is called Jude).

I haven't met another one either, but it does seem to be getting popular.

BelligerentYhoULE · 29/12/2010 21:45

Yes, tis nice.

sofaaddict · 29/12/2010 21:51

Thank you all - I have never met one or heard of one in RL so didn't realise that it was getting popular. Not that I'd mind as my DD has a name that I'd never met before but now seems to be everywhere! Grin

When I say getting popular, I don't mean in RL...just on MN name forums!

I would think 'Hey Jude' is a positive. It's a great name

SE13Mummy · 29/12/2010 22:05

I love it - it's one of two J names that neither DH or I have taught (then fallen out of love with due to its links with particularly tricky children). Had DD2 been a boy we'd have used the name Jude.

I know a 7-year-old, 5-year-old and 1-year-old all named Jude in the Lewisham area but none of them are at my school (2 form entry local primary, so lots of children).

MerryMarigold · 29/12/2010 22:08

I have a Jude. Only drawback for me is that is that you can't abbreviate it, so the poor kid gets called Woooooooodie! Blush I'm sure once he goes to school we will settle down and call him Jude.

MerryMarigold · 29/12/2010 22:09

PS. I know one other Jude, but none in my area

MissBeehivingUnderTheMistletoe · 29/12/2010 22:11

Mine is "Toooooodie" to his brother

NoahAndTheWhale · 29/12/2010 22:12

I know a boy Jude who is 2 or 3.

Also know a grown up lady Jude too. Suits both of them

panettoinydog · 29/12/2010 22:12

Don't like it. Bit hippy.

sofaaddict · 29/12/2010 22:13

MerryMarigold love that! Can imagine me yelling out a Wooooooooodie! Grin
said I love the song but worried that he would get sung at a lot... nah nah nah nah nah etc.!?!?
SE13Mummy am also a teacher and try and avoid names with connotations too. Have never met a Jude so felt quite safe with it - sounds like there may be a fair few around though! I don't mind that though, as long as my DC are the first ones to me if that makes sense?

BelligerentYhoULE · 29/12/2010 22:15

I've been teaching for nearly 20 years and have never met a Jude.

ShowOfHands · 29/12/2010 22:16

I think it was the biggest climber in the name charts last year. I know 4 baby Judes. 3 boys and my niece.

It's nice though.

ShowOfHands · 29/12/2010 22:17

It's still only just in the top 100 though iirc but I think the number of places it jumped is quite significant in judging it as an up and comer.

sofaaddict · 29/12/2010 22:18

Hi ShowofHands where can you find that information from? Thank you!

mamatomany · 29/12/2010 22:19

Love it

MerryMarigold · 29/12/2010 22:26

sofa, you can google I think the Times top 100 names.

From recollection it is now number 98 and jumped from way outside the top 100.

ShowOfHands · 29/12/2010 22:39

Baby names stats here

It is 98 and climbed 5 places.

Lucas was the biggest climber (another relative). I knew one of my relatives had the highest climbing name.

Anyway, the trend shows it's on the up!

ShowOfHands · 29/12/2010 22:42

Graph here showing how quickly it's leapt up in popularity over the last few years.

Iwantscallops · 29/12/2010 23:29

I have a Jude aged 1 and love it. He gets called Judy by close family (but please don't let that put you off!). I have yet to meet another Jude.

We sing 'hey Jude' to him and he rewards us with a big smile and little dance!

Go for it!

sofaaddict · 30/12/2010 08:21

Thanks all! Much more positive than I thought you would all be!

I love it. I know only one Jude, he is 3.
