How to convince DP...

...to my way of thinking? I'm 18+4 with a baby girl & we've been discussing names.

DP doesn't like any of the names i like & vice versa - well his names are ok but way to common & boring for my liking.

My choices are :-

Matilda Rose nn Tilly
Tabitha
Madison Isla
Freya
Alexa nn Lexi
Seraphina
Emerson Rose

His choice are names like Jessica, Abigail, Chloe, - basically very common names.

The only name we both said ok to were Jenna & Georgia but i really think they are JUST ok.

How can i convince him my names are better?

Both your names are nice, I prefer yours.

Could you compromise? Maybe a twist on either of your choices (Jessamy? Chloe is a nice middle name), he chooses second name?

spikydahlia · 29/12/2010 21:11

OMG at least your other half is normal!!! Mine suggested Boudicca and and Ulysses. AAAGH!!

Unfortunately we can't go with Ulysses as I know a friend who has already used this name.
Boudicca will be shortened to Dick at school and is just ridiculous.

I like
Matilda
Freya
Isla

Isla - I thought was unusual and a good choice but now I know 3 Islas at toddler groups. Freya is fairly popular too, but that doesn't matter. Better that than some weird name!

Sidge · 29/12/2010 21:21

I wouldn't say his names were more common than yours - I know of one of each on his list, and 5 out of 7 on your list.

Matilda Rose nn Tilly - pretty but very common lately
Tabitha - ditto
Madison Isla - I know of 3 Madisons!
Freya - pretty but also quite common
Alexa nn Lexi - I know of an Alexa, an Alexis and a Lexi.
Seraphina - this is pretty and unusual, my favourite on your list.
Emerson Rose - this seems quite an American name to me, more surnamey than firstnamey and quite masculine.

If you want some more suggestions, how about Fleur, Arabella, Jessamy, Rumer, Susannah, Eloise?

Panzee · 29/12/2010 21:24

Wait till you're in labour/on the slab having a CS. That's when my husband said I could have the name he disliked for months! Although we went for something else in the end...

Lonnie · 30/12/2010 11:10

I much prefeer your dh's names to yours.. PLEASE do not call a girl Emerson thats downright rude..

I love Seraphina but I am well aware it is a love or hate name.

Really you and dh are going to have to find names that you can both like.

As he likes traditional names and you are really fairly in that direction too (taking out Emerson and Seraphina) why dont you look at names like

Violet
Jemima
Josephine

or as you seem to like Rose what about Rosea?

fallingandlaughing · 30/12/2010 11:22

I think Emerson Rose is Teri Hatcher's daughter's name

You both need to like the name. Could you create a combined list of all the names and score them or something.

Anyway, you have my sympathies. DP and I have only been able to agree on one name and now he's gone off it because of how popular it is.

swanandduck · 30/12/2010 12:04

Would it not be better to find a compromise? TBH I prefer his names, they might be quite popular but so are some of your's and a couple are a bit 'over the top'. I like Georgia, though.

swanandduck · 30/12/2010 12:05

Oh, and Tabitha.

Common in what sense? Have you any idea how many Freyas are around?

Matilda and Seraphina are nice but otherwise his list is much better.

KenDoddsDadsDogEatsTinsel · 30/12/2010 12:34

Like Tabitha best from your list (I have been reading too much Jilly Cooper!)
Madison is very popular where I live. Only like Chloe from your DHs list.

Tortington · 30/12/2010 12:36

i can't help wondering, supposing you had an ugly kid

inflicted with a name like serephina

these things should be thought about, i mean not everyone in the world is gorg are they.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 30/12/2010 15:43

From you list I like Matilda and Tabitha. Am with Custardo on Seraphina.

Don't get the too common comment either, if you are thinking that names like Freya or Maddison aren't common you should rock on up to our playground on a Sunday morning.

I thought Emerson was a boy's name too.

latrucha · 30/12/2010 15:54

Just find something you both like. IME it's always difficult and pretty tense. Come up with a shortlist and decide when she's here. I'm pretty sure you'll get the casting vote after him seeing produce the child.

we've got a boy Emerson round our way. I also find you names to be ones that are currently fashionable. Tabitha id probably my favourite. Chloe is gorgeous.

latrucha · 30/12/2010 15:54

sorry for typos - bf!

cameli · 30/12/2010 16:11

Thanks everyone. I didn't realise the names i've chosen are that popular as my son is nearly 15 its years since i went to playgroups etc Blush

Recent names of friends babies are Mia, Grace, Maisie, Sophia, Jack, Charlie, Robbie, James, Isla (have loved for years but cant use it now) so was assuming these were the popular ones.

I never thought i'd be in this position again. I'm sure we'll agree eventually :)

Lonnie isn't Rosea a type of rash?

Lonnie · 30/12/2010 20:42

laughs Ginhag no Pityriasis rosea is a type of rash Rosea is a girls name I think it is pretty personally and a little unusual.

Hassled · 30/12/2010 20:44

I think his names are better. Sorry.
