Registering - How Quick?

Does anyone know - how quick is it to register a birth. Can you get a long birth certificate on the same day?

We live aborad with DH's job, so need to get a passport done asap and then a visa... so a bit of a long process ahead of us!

Any advice would be fab. :)

We had to make an appointment in advance, but were in and out within half an hour, and were able to get as many copies of long and short certs as we wanted (and were willing to pay for).

Phoned up on a Tuesday and got an appointment for the Thursday. Took around 20 mins and we got three copies of certificate there and then. Live in Manchester
