It depends on what you want - very traditional german names or names that are fashionable in germany now?

I'm in germany and the common names in kindergarten and school are

Jonas
Johannes
Felix
Lukas
Moritz

Lara
Sophia
Greta
Ida (pronounced eeda)
Clara
And lots of names that would seem old fashioned in Britain like Theresia, patricia, kristine

Canella · 23/12/2010 19:49

But if its traditional german names like Wolfgang or Adelheid then i'd steer clear!!

littleElif · 23/12/2010 19:53

depends what you define as "good" ;-)

HERE are the top 500 names from 2009 for Germany. any good ones in there?

InMyPrime · 23/12/2010 19:58

Girls' names I could recommend would be:

Solveig (pronounced 'Solvay')
Freya
Sonja
Silke

Boys' names
Max
Carsten
Christian
Florian

A lot of the most popular German names used by Germans are the same as or similar to English names (e.g. Charlotte, Sophie, Lukas, Phillip etc) so finding a distinctively German name that is 'normal' for a German and not old-fashioned might be hard.

MotherSnowyMountainGoat · 23/12/2010 20:02

Mmm, the problem is that the very traditional German names - Wolfgang, Adelheid, Otto, Edeltraud, etc, are seriously out of fashion at the moment - it would be the equivalent of calling your child Hilda or Ethel. Have a look at the most common names in Germany at the moment here. Most of them are fairly 'classical' names that are internationally known, but with German pronunciation (j pronounced as y etc).

Names to avoid at all costs: Grit and Bodo.

There was a thread some time back on German girls' names and I gave a long list of girls's names from DDs' school there.

JiltedJohnsJulie · 23/12/2010 20:14

Great list LittleElif, hadn't realised how many German names were so similar to ours. Had only looked at the girl's names though.

How about No 418? Grin

How about Sabine? The German Racing Driver who appears from time to time in Top Gear has that name.

Canella · 23/12/2010 22:03

Think i took quite a good guess at the popular names!! Feel like every boy round here is jonas or felix tho!!

littleElif · 24/12/2010 09:11

I actually worked with a 418 (we even had 2 lol in our office though they were French; never came across that name in Germany ;-)

belgo · 24/12/2010 09:23

I know a Fanny and a Bent.

belgo · 24/12/2010 09:23

Taken out of context, my comment looks very dodgy!

jellybeans · 24/12/2010 11:19
