There are some names which I've been quite surprised to see returning. For example, Edith was my granny's name. Much as I loved her, I was never keen on the name and can only presume the little Ediths now arriving are due to the Radio 1 DJ or something.

Are there any names which would surprise you if they were revived? For me, the list might include:

Girls

Doris
Ermyntrude
Gertrude

Boys

Arnold
Herbert
Roderick

Although I'm a big fan, obviously, I can't see Norbert being too popular

SnowMuchToBits · 18/12/2010 12:40

Norbert is fab! Almost as good as Norman Xmas Wink

Rindercella · 18/12/2010 12:41

Pura, Lydia is a ghastly name!

I think the little old lady/man names seem to be quite trendy at the moment. But the popular names of the 60s/70s seem so dated now and I just can't see them making a comeback anytime soon.

Trevor
Keith
Kelvin
Kevin
Colin

Tracy
Sandra
Sharon
Michelle

I actually like the name Michelle

christmaswrapping · 18/12/2010 12:43

Norbert is v popular in Poland, so wouldn't be surprised if it became norm over here.

Graham is another I think will be out for at least 30 years.

re Kathleen, Caitlin is supposed to be pronounced Kathleen, which is something I never knew.

spidookly · 18/12/2010 12:44

I don't know what's worse, calling your lovely little daughter something that rhymes with furtle or choosing a name because it's "on trend"

it's a bad enough phrase to use about clothes.

spidookly · 18/12/2010 12:45

Caitlin is supposed to be pronounced cotchleen. It is the Irish language equivalent of Kathleen.

christmaswrapping · 18/12/2010 12:46

Really balloonslayer? There you go my thing that I have learnt today.

That just goes to show that ALL baby name books should be obliged to indicate pronunciation. It does rather explain the Katelyn spelling which I've seen recently and don't particularly like.

I would have added Joyce to this list, but I see that people have been mentioning Joy a bit on Mumsnet lately so presumably that's a possible.

Marian is another contender, I think.

Myrtle is just mean. Why would you do it to your own child ?!

Love trudy though. Shame it's short for gurtrude or ermintrude.

Can't see Beryl coming back any time soon. Or Vera ( but I quite like this too).

RockinRobinBird · 18/12/2010 12:55

What's wrong with Lydia? This baby will be Lydia if it's a girl.

AllieW · 18/12/2010 12:56

Oh, and forgot about Howard too. And Bertha. Can't see Bernard making a comeback anytime soon either.

StealthPolarBear · 18/12/2010 12:57

I love Beryl. Every time I mention it on here it gets slated. Howard is glorious, and Howie is a cute nn. I also love Bernard as I think Bernie is cute too!

asdx2 · 18/12/2010 13:01

Have a nephew Nigel Blush. He's now 17, it was a shock tbh as SIL had never mentioned the name as a possible whilst pregnant. He's a nice, if a bit dim, lad though.
