blatantly copying the Classic girls names thread, but can anyone suggest any classic/traditional boys names? I have a nice long list of girls names (haven't shown them to DH yet!), but only have 2 boys names

Edward
Matthew

other names I really like, but can't use due to other close friends/family with the same name are:
William
George
Alexander
Christopher
Jonathan

My boys list has

Alexander
Edward
Adam
Benjamin
Marcus
Thomas
Matthew
Oliver
William
George
Christopher
Patrick
Andrew
Nicholas

Lots of the classic boys names seem to be very popular - or maybe I am just completely unimaginative and can only think of the popular ones :). DS is James by the way, and despite its popularity he is the only one in all the toddler groups we go to.

I'll be watching this thread with interest as we don't know the sex of DC2 yet

spookycharlotte121 · 02/12/2010 01:45

I can also reccomend James although my ds is tweaked to Jamie. Tis a good strong name :) My nanna always says so anyway.

Highlandgirl · 02/12/2010 10:34

I LOVE THIS THREAD...!

Very helpful as was the classic girls one!!!

Edmundo · 02/12/2010 11:43

I think the Royal names are the most classic

Henry
William
John
Edward
Charles
Andrew
Hugh
Louis
George
James
Arthur

and a few biblical..

Joseph
Thomas

I see biblical names such as Isaac, Noah, Elijah and Joshua as names that will date like Mark, Jason, Paul etc..

The nicknamed royal names will date terribly - Alfie, Albie, Charlie, Freddie etc..

nappyaddict · 02/12/2010 11:46

Robert
Francis
Frank
Alvin
Arnold
Bernard
Carlton
Cecil
Chester
Claude
Clyde
Cornelius
Delbert
Dudley
Earl
Edgar
Elmer

Jerome
Julius
Lester
Lloyd
Marvin
Maurice
Melvin
Milton
Murray
Myron
Norman
Orville
Oswald
Percy
Rudolph
Sherman
Sylvester
Vernon
Waldo
Wallace

This may help too.

rachel234 · 02/12/2010 19:24

Nice solid names on this thread - really lovely.

I agree, the nicknamey names like Alfie, Charlie, Archie, Albie already sound a bit dated to my ears.

mopsyflopsy · 02/12/2010 21:06

Adam
Andrew
Christopher
David
Michael
Thomas
Peter
Stephen
Quentin
Richard
Samuel
William

are all classic, timeless names that won't date imo.

BelligerentGhoul · 02/12/2010 21:09

Edward is gorgeous.

I think names like david, Andrew and Philip are all due a revival, as are Terence and Timothy.

Laurence
Sebastian
Benedict
Bartholomew
Hector
Rupert
Robin

yes, lots of great names suggested thanks - unfortunately most of them seem to already be used by close friends, family or pets!

I now have about 10 girls & 10 boys names on my long list - just need to show them to DH to see what he thinks now! Hmm

Lovely names on here - as someone mentioned already, have a look at the boys names used last year below which are outside the top 250 or so. Some lovely classics there.
