Okay baby needs a name that works in French and English without too much alteration. I want names which is unusual but not massively eye-brow raising so here's our combined initial compromise list in alphabetical order:

Adeline/Adele/Adelie
Alys
Arianne
Helene
Isolde
Lilianne
Leonore
Lucie
Marguerite
Melisande
Melodie
Ophelie
Prudence
Sabine
Stephanie
Victoria

Thoughts? Opinions? Boring? Impossibly to say? Terribly trendy?

Any good sibling pairs bearing in mind this is DC1 and we would like another?

Surname very similar to 'Try'.

Alys
Arianne
Lucie
Marguerite

How about Elise?

KenDoddsDadsDog · 22/11/2010 22:27

Alys and Marguerite are both lovely.
Also like Adelie, have not heard it before.

frakkinup · 23/11/2010 15:07

MerryMarigold - DH likes Elise; I just hear 'Für Elise' in my head...

We're arguing over Marguerite now. I like, he thinks it sounds a bit airy-fairy.

Melisande isn't common per se but there was one in the family and I think it's a pretty name!

Like Alys & Lucie.

Elise too ordinary?

JamaicaGeisha · 23/11/2010 16:25

Sabine is on our list for DD2, should I ever manage to persuade DH...

Here are my votes Smile:

Adeline/Adele/Adelie - really like. Can also use the spelling Adelene.
Alys - really pretty
Arianne - nice
Helene - nice but prefer the spelling without the E
Isolde - I love this name in theory but actually think it's quite difficult to say in practice
Lilianne - not keen and will be shortened to Lily
Leonore - not sure
Lucie - don't like
Marguerite - not sure
Melisande - don't like
Melodie - pretty
Ophelie - my favourite from your list - really think this is gorgeous
Prudence - not keen
Sabine - nice
Stephanie - pretty
Victoria - it's lovely and classic but not quite the same as some of your other choices. Wonder if the mum who thinks of Melisande and Isolde will really be happy with Victoria?

frakkinup · 25/11/2010 18:27

Hmmm TTL good point....

Victoria is a 'safe' choice that if all else fails we can agree on. Ditto Lucie. FWIW I came up with Isolde and DH with Melisande, but there are suprisingly few names we can actually see eye to eye on. Usually one of us has a strong liking for the name and the other is okay with it!

Know how you feel frakkinup!

Don't know how it can be so hard!

Adeline/Adele/Adelie -- Love Adele, like Adeline, Adelie is a kind of penguin
Alys -- Love
Arianne -- has a Disneyesque feel to it
Helene -- Love
Isolde -- I would put it in a category that I call "Names Like Ursula"; stern names in other words
Lilianne -- a bit frili(anne)
Leonore -- Love, classic and lovely sound
Lucie -- Love, simple and sweet
Marguerite -- Love, classic, sweet
Melisande -- Lovely, a bit like Miranda in my mind
Melodie -- Meh, not in the same class as the more classic names on your list
Ophelie -- too tragic
Prudence -- always reminds me of prunes
Sabine -- Love, nice German feel
Stephanie -- too 70s for me
Victoria -- ok, but Vicky is the oh so obvious nn unless you want to spend your life saying 'It's Tory, actually' or 'No, it's Victoria.'

So
Adele (and Adeline squeaks in)
Alys
Helene
Leonore
Lucie
Marguerite
Melisande
Sabine

I like Elise too. Really nice.
