Hi all, how unusual is the spelling Tobie as opposed to Toby? I like the name Toby but for some reason I love the name when it's spelt Tobie.

Do you think it would be a mistake to use the spelling Tobie - would it be regarded as one of those 'creative' spellings which I usually really dislike!

Thanks guys.

Toby is much nicer

purpleturtle · 20/11/2010 14:09

I don't think I've ever seen it spelled Tobie, and I would probably think it a mistake before 'creative'. Sorry.

Great name but he'll spend his life telling everyone it's Toby with an ie...

2madboys · 20/11/2010 14:16

I have a Toby spelt with the y. One friend insists on spelling it Tobey (ala Tobey Maguire!), but it has never been misspelt as Tobie. I think it would be regarded as a 'creative' spelling! Love the name though and we don't know any other Tobys round here.

pinkhebe · 20/11/2010 14:18

It's the female version around here. I have a Toby, or Tobes as he's known :) Had he been a girl he could possibly been a Tobie as we couldn't agree on a girls name

thelibster · 20/11/2010 14:20

Agree with pinkhebe, I have a Toby (also generally known as "Tobes" Grin) though his birth certificate says "Tobias", Tobie is, I think, the female version.

I don't think there is a rule, especially considering

Charles/Charlie/Charly
Oliver/Ollie/Olly
Alfred/Alfie/Alfy
Archibald/Archie/Archy

so Tobias can just as easily be shortened to Tobie as Toby imo.

rachel1970 · 20/11/2010 14:46

I think Tobie is a more natural shortening for Tobias than Toby but I think both are fine. Both look and sound masculine imo.
