Hugo - too posh still?

DH is really keen (and I like too) on the name Hugo for our next (and final!) son.

Is it too posh to use? We are well spoken/middle class but we are not posh and the boys go to the local (but very good!) local comp.

Should we stick to Isaac or Leo - which are much safer (like current children's names?).

Don't bother with the other names, if you like Hugo, have Hugo!

It is posh. DH vetoed it on those grounds (and he is posh himself). But I like a bit of posh. Great name.

Leo and Isaac are nice, but Hugo is better.

I like Hugo too. We're considering it for dc2 but we both separately knew the same Hugo was really was very posh. And very nice. But it just makes me think of him...

I think names like Hugo and Quentin are no longer posh. I actually think that a person can be posh, but not a name. And the more non-posh people use these names the more they will become dis-associated from 'poshness'.

Why are people here so obsessed with 'poshness' . I mean, does it have any negative associations?

Personally I love Hugo and Quentin and find them much more interesting and elegant than more common names like Leo, Jack or Alfie, for example.

I think it's not so much that people are obsessed with poshness - it's more that there is concern that you don't want to appear to aspire to a 'class' you're not in. We had the same issue when we were considering Monty.

For me, Hugo is up there with Monty and all those names discussed above. And like you, OP, for our situation (similar to yours) I had the same concerns - even though they are great names.

I don't get this 'worry' about poshness either... And what is wrong with being aspirational? Surely we should all aspire to do as well as we can in life?

Personally I love Hugo (and Quentin & Monty), I find them elegant, classic and not overused as many more common/popular names. I honestly don't see what the worry about being 'aspirational' is about, honestly.

Can someone please explain to me (I'm German) what defines how posh or chav someone is?

I am University educated, as is DH (American), we live in a nice part of greater London, we're raising our children bilingually, I wear sensible but (I think) nice clothes.... are we posh?

Or do we foreigners not count and can name our children whatever we want ?

I think that few names are perhaps considered "posh" now.

A surname might be more of an indication of "poshness" now, iyswom.

I think you get to name your children whatever you like, tammytoby - it's just british people with hang ups!

I knew a ghastly and very 'posh' Hugo once, and he still didn't put me off the name. Go for it, if you like it.

A lot of names that are described as 'posh' are actually very common in other countries. Quentin, for example, has been in the top 10 boys names for a number of years and Hugo is quite common in Germany, for example.

You do have to be fairly posh, I think, but it's a great name.

But surely the only way for names to become less 'posh' is if more 'non-posh' people start using them, no?

And what if a 'posh' parent names their child a 'posh' name but that child doesn't turn out very 'posh' (in terms of education etc)...?

I guess I'm still struggling with the whole concept of 'classifying' people and names in this way....

Too posh for my tastes - but then I don't go for the whole MC aspirational thing - I prefer classless names that have a great role model in history or beautiful meaning - but I'm probably in the minority with the classless thing.

But I also think you must name your child whatever you want.
