dh loves the name felicity but i dislike this name. he likes it beacuse it's sweet ,feminine yet fun and grown up.dh insists he likes no other name . i dislike it because i find it to sickly sweet and a bit wishy washy .

i love the name cecily because it's sweet , feminine, yet grown up and serious. i have a list of other names i like and could compromise on but dh has vetoed them all. he dislikes it because it's too old fashioned and unusual

in reality they are both very similar names in terms of how they sound sound ,femininity etc

dh after initially insisting on felicity has now agreed i can call her cecily

however , i don't want , to railroad dh into a name he dislikes. i really want to find a compromise we can both love.

problem is dh will not come up with any suggestions and i have given up trying to find a compromise.

so do your best and find us the name of our dreams or at least a few suggestions i can put to dh

Lots of repeats are coming now.
I would suggest giving your dh a baby names book and asking him to make a long list of names he does like.

You never know he might come up with something you could both love Smile.

thell · 06/11/2010 11:22

Anyone suggested Helena?
Cecilia a nice variation on Cecily.
I'm really surprised he doesn't like Verity!

Good luck x

oops.

Francesca?

smilingserenely · 06/11/2010 16:03

GILLYBOAT i have tried giving him the name book and he won't even look at it never mind trying to find a compromise .

thell definitely thought verity would be a strong compromise name but he wouldn't consider it .

i'm really dithering at the moment.do i just give up and accept his choice ? felicity is such a happy name and been well received by most people but yet when i hear or say the name i really dislike it . should i just accept or keep insisting on something different .

my favourite is still cecily although ceceliaa nn cecily /celia would be an option .

felicity -cecily or felicity-cecilia would be tongue twisters and is really not an option but maybe it is the only way forward .

although there are at leaast a dozen names mentioned on here that i like more than the name felicity . he ,however, insists he likes none of them .

augusta we both sort of like . he likes it more than i do but i just don't think i'm brave enough .

MRSVWOOLF i really like cordelia but again it's not for dh

You need to sit him down and tell him he can't dig his heels in and refuse to listen to anything else. Just refuse to countenance Felicity and tell him it's not up for discussion, and if he doesn't like the sound of that, tell him you don't like being dictated to either. This requires a standoff. Don't budge.

Augusta is a truly horrible name imo (Augustus Gloop).

smilingserenely · 06/11/2010 17:58

thanks mathanxiety what really annoys is the fact that he refuses to accept i do not like the name felicity irrational as that maybe to him and others . i think i also have an unfounded fear that if you call a child felicity she'll end up as the most miserable adult .

names are so personal what one person loves another dislikes etc but he cannot seem to understand this .

i have decided she will be called cecily unless he is prepared to discuss other options as i have always been prepared to compromise with him .he is the one who has been unwilling to discuus other options.

I think if you made the discussion a serious affair, tell him the two of you need to talk about names for the baby and set a time for it as if it was a business meeting, he might take your opposition seriously. Then state your case for a committee approach and the climbing down from untenable positions and the unreasonable expectation he seems to have that he will have his way simply by being stubborn.

smilingserenely · 06/11/2010 19:01

mathanxiety will give it ago but hasn't worked so fair

Stick to your guns smiling, Felicity really doesn't do it for me either! (Apologies to any mums of lovely Felicitys out there!) To me it's horsey and wet, kind of the female equivalent of Rupert.

My DP vetoed loads of names I liked too, but at least was sporting enough to like more than one. (I'm not even acknowledging the Winifred Incident.)

stripeybumpsmum · 06/11/2010 21:06

Aurelia?

smilingserenely · 06/11/2010 21:15

aurelia lovely but just too unusual for dh

turtle thanks thats exactly how i feel it's a bit jolly hockeysticks ,goody two shoes / enid blytonish for me . it, however ,is not a bad name in itself and i'm sure there are lots of gorgeous little felicitys out there . it's just not my personal taste .

sometimes ,however, i feel i must be mad not to like it as dh loves it and so do most rl friends to whom we have mentioned it .

Fiona Katherine?

Suncottage · 06/11/2010 21:18

smilingserenely · 06/11/2010 21:32

fiona know far too many adult fionas to make it a possibility .

love katherine nn kitty but have a niece with that name so couldn't use it.

roberta not keen on feminised forms of male names sorry

Meredith?

Ellen?

russiandolly · 07/11/2010 08:43

Hmmm...there must be one name in the world that you both like! More research needed as you both need to love the name you choose. He simply has to budge and you need to (again) explain your feelings. Hmmm...

Miriam
Flora
Florence
Isobel
Elodie
Celine
Delphine
Delia
Cordelia

Bluecloud · 07/11/2010 08:54

Athena
Camille
Phoebe
Octavia
Otillie
Adele
Elise
Cordelia
Louisa
Annabelle

FWIW I [heart] the name Cecily and think it knocks spots of Felicity Smile. Cecily is just a nicer sound and Cece as a nickname is gorgeous!

smilingserenely · 07/11/2010 13:34

russiandolly my feelings exactly there must be more than one name he likes . he insists ,however , that felicity is the only one he likes .

contemplating putting felicity as first name to keep dh happy .cecily as second name but using cecily as her actual name on adaily basis .
