dh loves the name felicity but i dislike this name. he likes it beacuse it's sweet ,feminine yet fun and grown up.dh insists he likes no other name . i dislike it because i find it to sickly sweet and a bit wishy washy .

i love the name cecily because it's sweet , feminine, yet grown up and serious. i have a list of other names i like and could compromise on but dh has vetoed them all. he dislikes it because it's too old fashioned and unusual

in reality they are both very similar names in terms of how they sound sound ,femininity etc

dh after initially insisting on felicity has now agreed i can call her cecily

however , i don't want , to railroad dh into a name he dislikes. i really want to find a compromise we can both love.

problem is dh will not come up with any suggestions and i have given up trying to find a compromise.

so do your best and find us the name of our dreams or at least a few suggestions i can put to dh

merry have suggested he write down a list of names but he obstinately refuses to do even that .
he's been so negative i'm not sure whether i'm being daft to like cecily and really think we'll never agree on this.

Cecily is lovely. I wanted to call my dd that, but someone from my MN antenatal thread thought of it and I didn't want to steal it in case she had a girl (she did, so just as well!). You're not being daft. And if dh doesn't take any action, or become more positive about discussing different names, then I think you have every right to go ahead with Cecily. Try a single syllable middle name - it sounds fantastic. Cecily Jude, Cecily Kate etc.

MerryMarigold · 02/11/2010 21:52

Charis - Latin for Grace
Cerys - welsh version, think it means love
Florence
Meredith

OK, another suggestion. Print this thread off for dh and ask him to pick his top 10 from them. You do the same. Regardless of whether he likes them or not, simply in order of preference. If Cecily is still second (or third if Augusta is in there!), then that's obviously the one you both like the best...

(though am sure you have some time. I didn't name dd for a few days after her birth).

smilingserenely · 02/11/2010 21:56

thankyou merry really nice to know others think cecily is a lovely name . i also agree that as dh is being so unhelpful and won't compromise ,he is waiving his right to choose.

he's now suggesting winifred as he had his tonsils out at st winifreds . why did i marry a man with such terrible taste .

I do like Felicity but you can't just fall for a name you don't like.

TBH I would say if he has agreed to cecily, go with it Smile, let it lie and see if she looks like a cecily when she comes out.

I always love Mirren when it is suggested on here, any good?

Also I have never met a man who doesn't like Rachel (am old though) - it was dh's only choice and actually I got into it, although we had a boy anyway so never used it.

EldritchCleavage · 03/11/2010 12:31

Sorry smiling!

MerryMarigold · 03/11/2010 20:50

WINIFRED! Shock Was he very fond of all his great aunts?

MerryMarigold · 03/11/2010 20:50

(Though Winnie is quite sweet)

We have a french teacher at our school and her name is Elodie. Everybody loves it & I think it is a really beautiful name.

smilingserenely · 03/11/2010 23:09

love cordelia but you've guessed dh doesn't

strangely augusta is growing on me .i think its a great name and sounds very strong and determined. it's definitely got presence and gussie is very cute .not sure i'm brave enough though and not sure dd would thank me for it .

strangely he loves augusta and yet the name matilda is too strong and warlike for his little girl . it reminds him of a warrior queen !

murder diminished responsibility or divorce on the grounds of irreconcilable differences is beginning to feel like an option !!

Obviously if you don't like felicity do not choose it, but just to give you a different nn idea, my youngest dd is felicity and dd2 calls her licy pronounced lissy.
Also in regards to the ballerina image, I was best friends with a felicity in university, she was studying Astrophysics and her favourite sport was rock climbing... so :)

But good luck anyway, name choosing can be tricky!

EldritchCleavage · 04/11/2010 10:34

Am reading Vogue so decided to pick out the proper names and make a list for you. It's quite fun!

Muriel (not in Vogue but quite nice)
Florence
Verity
Lucinda
Camille
Alyssa
Nina
Natasha
Alexandra
Naomi
Andrea
Saffron
Bay
Allegra
Grace
Yasmin
Bella
Luella
Alice
Violet
Solange
Jessica
Lola
Daria
Natalia
Sasha
Angela
Tamasin
Carmen
Georgia
Stella
Lara
Shona

MerryMarigold · 04/11/2010 19:59

Daria is a Russian name and I think it means 'gift' (dredging up v old memory of Russian friend!). The nn is Dasha, which I think is super!

smilingserenely · 04/11/2010 20:17

while the vogue names are lovely they seem either very unusual eg solange or very
popular either now or in the recent past eg angela or grace

really looking for something unusual ie not popular but not weird .

daria lovely have considered dara but dh thinks its too harsh

might just give in to the name felicity and then try to persuade him that we should really have another dc and i'll name him or her . that'll probably be enough to persuade him that cecily is the right name after all.

OP posts:
smother · 04/11/2010 22:28

clarissa
melissa
cecilia
adelphi
collette
claudia

sophielouise · 04/11/2010 22:42

Hi I've just seen this thread it's great! Just the sorts of names I like too.

How about...
Melody
Amelie
Orea

smilingserenely · 05/11/2010 13:38

really love clarissa but dh pulled a face when i mentioned it .

melody also really lovely

amelie lovely but has become very popular and if it ended up shortened to amy would loose it's appeal.
