FINALLY narrowed it down to three - Edward, George and Thomas

With 2 and a bit weeks to go and 9 months of umming and aahing and changing our minds, we have finally decided on three choices for our baby boy due in 2 1/2 weeks.

Edward (my father's and grandfather's name)
George (my other grandfather's name)
Thomas (English equivalent of husband's name)

My preference is definitely towards Edward or George because (a) they are connected to my family and the baby will have my husband's last name (which is a Serbian last name; and (b) Thomas is very very popular.

Middle name will probably be one of the ones we don't choose - like Edward George or example or George Thomas

I LOVE Edward. I love George but wonder whether it's a bit, I don't know, "blah". Husband prefers George or Thomas to Edward but happy with all three choices.

Your thoughts would be appreciated!

I don't think they are boring/dull names as some people have suggested but they are traditional, that is true.

I like that MissHavishams said George has the most character - it is growing on me. Kind of quirky in an old man type way.

funtimewincies - I agree with calling a child by their fullname, but I also like to be able to have a nickname as well. My name is Emma and my parents obviously called me Emma but my nickname was "Em", which I like. So I don't necessarily want a completely different name for the nickname to use in substitution for the full name, but just the option of something to use as a cute nickname.

All lovely names.

I have an Edward (Eddie) so like this best.

George would be my next choice I've always loved this name.

Thomas is always a lovely classic, yes very popular but I don't think the populairy has dented it's appeal as it's not faddy, and Tom is a brillinat name for a man.

I'd agree keep all three and decide once he's here. I had two names for DS2 and I went with one name for a few hours but it didn't feel right so I swapped to the other name which did feel right and stuck with that.

DS has the middle name George as I didn't want it as a first name because of 'Georgie Porgie pudding and pie, kissed the girls and made them cry...'

I think they'll all a bit boring tbh, there's bound to be loads of kids with the same names about

Thanks for clearing that up ayjayjay and emmyloo2. We did the opposite and deliberately gave our dcs names that couldn't be shortened .

I think it's a good suggestion that I keep all three names and then "test" them once he pops out.

funtimewincies - I think your approach is very common (and sensible) as well. Lots of people don't like names which can be shortened because otherwise you can stop the kids at school calling them something other than their full name. And let's be honest - you can always create a nickname which has no bearing to the name anyway! So you can always have a cute nickname just for you to use without having to shorten the full name.

I am biased as I have one, but I love George

Its a classic name. You can see a baby, a toddler, a child, a teen or an adult with it. They can grow up to be a footballer, an actor, a doctor or a primeminister. The name suits it all.

Its popular, but not too common (1 or 2 every year in school)

My George is a Georgie to everyone.

I love George Edward. Lovely name.

We were going to have Edward for DS2, but then the whole Twilight thing exploded and I was a bit worried it would get really popular.

Edward, I wanted it for ds, but couldn't because of our surname.

I love Ed/Eddie so I'd choose it over gEORGE.

Thomas is the best! Edward too popular now with twilight, george abit dull and too popular.

emmyloo - O love them all. In fact DS2 was going to be one of your three names. When he was born he looked nothing like it so he got one of your other names as a first name and has your other name as a middle name.

Not boring at all but traditional. I think there is a reason they are traditional though... because they are good!

Cece - which one did you go with? I think we will test out all three on him for a day or so and see which sticks.....

All nice solid traditional names. But what I really don't get is why everyone says Edward has become too popular now (because of Twilight or whatever). Aside from it being a hugely popular choice on Mumsnet, I've never known any in real life (apart from my own DS), and if you take a peek at the 2009 National Statistics out today it actually slipped 2 places to #44.

All lovely names, I reckon with a choice of three and not long to go it's probably ok to wait until the he arrives to make the final decision.
