Lydia - what do you think?

Never thought it would be so hard to pick a name that both me and OH agree on. We keep changing our minds but this week the favourite is 'Lydia Mae'.

I think its a lovely name.

MamaLazarou · 11/10/2010 14:58

Lydia is lovely. Mae spoils it.

123nellyc · 11/10/2010 15:09

Any other suggestions for a middle name. I like Grace but OH doesn't?

Lydia is gorgeous, but agree with MamaLazarou about Mae spoiling it.

I think most one syllable names will sound a bit 'twee' with it.

I half decided on Lydia Susan when picking names but had DS so didn't get to use it in the end.

Aitch · 11/10/2010 15:25

so long as your surname isn't Kettle.

stillbobbysgirl · 11/10/2010 15:36

yeah i loved this for my 2nd, when i told old bag MIL, her reply was "like lid of your teapot" Smile

Rockbird · 11/10/2010 15:48

Gorgeous, strong conternder for DD2, DD's name was a toss up between Lydia and what we went with.

ValiumSingleton · 11/10/2010 18:31

I love it. It was on my list for dc1 8 years ago and it's one of the few names that I still like nearly a decade later.

princessglitter · 11/10/2010 18:34

Lovely. My Lydia is Lydia Catherine.

batsforlashes · 11/10/2010 18:51

Adore it- probably one of my all time favourite names. Unfortunately my dh did not agree so never got to use it ;-(.

Not so sure about Mae with it.

Lydia is lovely
Mae is not

Ladyem · 11/10/2010 18:58

Love the name Lydia! It's beautiful! I also like Mae, but it is very popular - as is Grace - and think that with the name Lydia kind of spoils it. But then, I am rubbish at thinking of names so I have no alternative suggestions. What other names do you like so that we can suggest similar? (If that is what you want!)

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 11/10/2010 19:02

I love Lydia; can't use it ourselves because it's the name of one of DH's exes and he feels weird about it.

Mae is OK; I'm not crazy about it but I don't dislike it the way that many of the previous posters do.

Northernlurker · 11/10/2010 19:03

I like Lydia but Lydia Mae is a bit twee

Lydia Jane

Lydia Susannah

Lydia Mary

Lydia Jade

Lydia Ruth

Flossie69 · 11/10/2010 19:04

My niece is Lydia Rose. I think that is a lovely combination.

pointydog · 11/10/2010 19:06

Don;t like it. Sounds prim.

Francagoestohollywood · 11/10/2010 19:06

Lydia is a lovely name, that doesn't really need another one. Lydia.

said · 11/10/2010 19:14

Great name. Not overly popular. I always imagine Lydia's growing into Sarah Parish look and soundalikes. Agree that it deserves a nicer name than Mae

MortBlacksand · 11/10/2010 19:20

I like the name alot but it would make me hum the Tattooed Lady whenever we met....

TotorosOcarina · 11/10/2010 19:21

Lydia was our first choice for DD for ages, but then we heard 'Lydia Chlamydia' and 'Lydia teapot' and it put me right off.

serenity · 11/10/2010 19:33

DD is Lydia (Lydia Athene fyiw)

Obviously we quite like it Grin It's not so unusual that people look askance when they hear it, but it's quirky enough that she's the only one in her school.

Thanks guys. Think we will stick with Lydia but with no middle name. We also like Madeline/Maddie but unsure because of the stigma around it.

FernieB · 12/10/2010 12:28

Much prefer Madeline. A friends daughter is Lydia. She was trying to find the top of the biscuit tin once and asked 'where's the lid?'. A little voice piped up 'here I am!'.

She is always referred to as Lyd and it sounds awful.
