Martha

Hi all. DD is 4 weeks old and has been named Martha Felicity-Rose. DH has started to give her the NN Martie on the odd occassion, which I am not sure about . What do you think of the nn? Should I try and discourage it?

My dh's grandmother was called Martha and her nn was Mattie.
I think it's going to be shortened somehow and if your DH naturally calls her that, it could make him feel silly if you tell him not to.

They're are all lovely names and even if you call her a NN at home, once at school, some children may choose to call her something else anyway.

My BIL is called James. His mates called him Jim, wife calls him James and we call him Jamie. It doesn't matter as long as the child doesn't mind being called NNs.

I think you are probably fighting a losing battle re nn's, they tend to evolve and stick. Marty's quite cute, I wouldn't worry. Your dd will soon voice her own opinions about it soon enough!

I have a Martha who is 11 weeks old. Already my husband has taken to calling her Marthie. Don't quite get in myself as it's not actually shortening the name. He just can't help himself. I do comment every now and again as to what her name is but it makes no difference. Having a Patrick and a William I was hoping to get away with nicknames on this one but looks like its not to be

I met a lady called Marfa on holiday last year. Honestly it was spelt/pronounced like that.

Don't worry about it. If you prefer the full name Martha then call her that but I don't think your DH using a nickname is a big deal. As others said, she will get different nicknames throughout life and this is obviously an affectionate name so IMO really nothing to get peeved about. I do agree that Martha sounds nicer than Martie, but her name is still Martha!!

I wouldn't worry about it. We have a Harriet who we call Hatsy. Can't help it, it just comes out. It would be very hard to stop even though it's not what I would have 'chosen' as a nn.

Thanks for your replies. I have not really had the time to be too overly concerned with Martha having a nn but DD called her "mimi" the other day, which I thought was quite cute. Although 99% of time she is referred to as Martha which I still love

Marty McFly, from Back to the Future, that's a great nickname! Like others have said, nn's just evolve, you can't stop them or force them. Congrats on Martha!

It isn't a bad nickname! I won't tell you what my DP calls our DD, I hate the NN he has made up and I'm forever telling him not to call her it. Mimi I like!

Thanks - I definately need to be more relaxed about it. "Mimi" is kind of growing on me now as a little pet name
