Boo for a girl?

NickiStan · 03/10/2010 21:08

We have just started thinking about names and I really like Boo for a girl? We have quite a long surname so would like something nice and short. I know it sounds quite cutesy but think the lack of a middle name would help.

Thoughts?

Thanks

Can't imagine how little Boo would cope with a trip to a panto Hmm

tudorrose · 03/10/2010 22:54

My DD3 has the nick name Boo, everyone calls her that, even her doctors when I take her for her hospital check ups. She looks like Boo from Monsters Inc, her older sister noticed one day and the name stuck!
It's cute now she's 2, but I can't imagine it as a "proper" name to be honest.

DinahRod · 03/10/2010 22:55

Have you read To Kill A Mockingbird?

tudorrose · 03/10/2010 22:57

It annoys me actually! I have three DD and her name is my absolute favourite and nobody ever uses it! Grin

AllarmBells · 03/10/2010 22:58

Doesn't pass the "blind date or lawyer" test!

Bo is a Scandinavian name....it's a boy's name but I believe Ulrika Jonnson used it for her daughter (after her father).

Quite like the idea of Boudicca/Bodicea, Boo for short, in a weird way!

Mind you, I've got DD mocked by her class by calling her "sausage" in the playground Blush

wilkos · 03/10/2010 23:01

what is the blind date or lawyer test? Confused

Remotew · 03/10/2010 23:03

It's a nickname, know lots of boys with this as a nickname. Give her a real name.

Remotew · 03/10/2010 23:05

Boo Radley was a boy, also a name of a crap group.

AllarmBells · 03/10/2010 23:07

wilkos
Imagine being introduced to someone as, "This is Boo, your blind date"
Then imagine "This is Boo, your lawyer"
The point of the test is for the name to pass both parts!

I would say Boo fails the lawyer side.
Ethel or Mabel or something might fail the blind date side. Unless you are an octogenarian.

HTH :)

B52s · 04/10/2010 09:29

Good Lord, No.

Bluebell99 · 04/10/2010 09:33

Would you as a grown adult like to be called Boo yourself? Didn't think so! This name is for life, might be fine for a baby but for a grown adult, it is ridiculous.

ApocalypseCheese · 04/10/2010 09:36

Call her Tabitha and let that be the end of it.

Tabby ticks the cute box whilst giving her a name she won't want to kick you for Grin

ItWasADarkAndStormyNight · 04/10/2010 09:39

Haha, I clicked on this knowing it would be no, no, no. Seriously though, no!

duchesse · 04/10/2010 09:54

Boo is a perfectly good nickname. Give her a sensible name and call her Boo as a nn.

CornflowerB · 04/10/2010 09:56

Isn't is a dimunitive of Elizabeth - Lizzy Boo or something? Call her Boo as a nickname but you need to give her a proper name too. She is, after all, going to turn into a grown woman.

yawningmonster · 04/10/2010 10:14

Our dd has the nickname Bow (after ds announcing after her birth that Princess Rainbow was a much nicer name than the one we chose and it seems everyone agrees and she is mostly called Bow or Rainbow!) Anyway we have received no end of comment on this by those who don't know it is not her real name and I imagine that you would find the same if you named your baby Boo, keep it as a nickname.

allyfe · 04/10/2010 12:52

It is a nickname. It might be cute for a little girl, and although I really don't think that names and professions go together, it is hardly a name for an adult. I honestly think it would be cruel. I know a lot of people who nickname their children boo (as a result of monsters inc), so you can still use it, but please - don't put it on her birth certificate! She would have no choice about whether or not she wanted to have a cutsie girly name for her whole life or not. If you use it as a nickname, then she may decide to keep it, but give her a real name and let her choose.

PaigeTurner · 04/10/2010 15:24

What about Blue/Bluebell?

cumbria81 · 04/10/2010 15:42

You must be fucking joking.

What a shit idea.

Sorry

BeccaandEvie · 04/10/2010 15:45

Boo is what my dad calls my mum and has done since forever. Very cute as a nickname.

flopsy1974 · 04/10/2010 15:49

Don't do it!

ProfessorLaytonIsMyLoveSlave · 04/10/2010 15:50

Cute nickname, but doesn't give her enough options as a given name.

MrsJohnDeere · 04/10/2010 15:50

I know of a real life Boo. Her full name not a nn. Everyone who learns the name, without exception, says 'eh, really' in surprised tones, then follows it up with 'that poor child, her school days are going to be hell'.

(said child is with cm not mother when these comments are made btw)

chippy47 · 04/10/2010 15:51

Boo Radley -bloke (a decent one though)
Boo Radleys -80/90's band -still making big royalties from 'Wake up boo' - written about his girlfriend Rebecca
'Boo' Weekley -US golfer (nickname)

not looking good for a girl.

ShadeofViolet · 04/10/2010 15:52

I think of Monsters Inc.
