I love it: OH does but has big worries about her teenage years.
Am I setting her up for trouble or is he worrying a bit too much?
Please someone say you can't even see what he's getting at!

I think it's a gorgeous name, but the margarine association is just too strong ("spreads easily").

pinkgrasshopper · 03/10/2010 18:21

Sorry- but I think I do. Not sure teenagers would necessarily make the association, or am I being very naieve? The trouble is now you have that point on your head will it not stick with you...?

pinkgrasshopper · 03/10/2010 18:22

Oh- I was on a whole different association...

addictedtoportlandbabies · 03/10/2010 18:24

I love it and would love to call DD1 due this week Flora. DH has vetoed though. Says the margarine thing is too much of a problem, also that we would have to call DC2 Fauna, plus there is the spreads easily issue. TBH we NEVER have margarine in the house, so I don't really get that association.

hippyhen · 03/10/2010 18:31

I love Flora. I used to know a girl called that at school and so far as I know she wasn't teased for it.

RupertTheBear · 03/10/2010 18:34

I love it. It is the name I was nearly called (my mum wanted it, my dad wasnt having it). I hated it all through my teens and was so relieved at my lucky escape.
What about Florence? It is my current favourite name and the name of my hypothetical dd2.

Sunlightdances · 03/10/2010 23:05

I met a Flora at university who seemed relieved when I said, "Oh, Roman Goddess!" and nothing about margarine. I don't know about 'spreads easily', but perhaps I've forgotten how cruel teenagers can be.

kveta · 04/10/2010 10:54

just out of interest, what middle name would you use? Every flora I have ever met has the same middle name (myself included)

I like the name now, but didn't for a long time.

messylittlemonkey · 04/10/2010 12:32

We nearly called DD2 Flora but DP preferred Florence which I felt wasn't quite right. we used neither, but it's a lovely name!

HollyGoHeavily · 04/10/2010 12:35

I'm sorry but I just think margarine.... Not a great association...

Goldrill · 04/10/2010 12:37

hmm - guess it's not just OH then!

It was the "spreads easily" bit he was most worried about - and other such margerine related connotations. (Although I thought being pro-active and good for your heart might be quite sweet, really: 35 week hormones perhaps).

RupertTheBear - did like Florence but not a fan of F& the Machine which is something I definitely can't get out of my head.
addictedto... we never have marg in either and it was a bit of a leap for me - which probably has a lot to do with me thinking it great and hime not!
Kveta - erm, well it was going to be "May" but I suspect that might just compound the problem. What's the "standard" middle name - am intrigued!

Thanks for all comments - much appreciated!

ah, they have all been varients on Jane/Jayne :o (all in late 20s to late 40s though, so it was probably the middle name du jour at the time :))

Flora May would probably not be the best name combo...

gingerwench · 04/10/2010 15:04

i love the name but rejected it thinking that the nickname would be "Marge"

pigindisguise · 04/10/2010 16:02

Makes me think of margarine too I'm afraid
How about Frida which I think is nice

EffieB · 05/10/2010 21:27

Flora lovely! Every buggery name has something crappy that can be made out of it and I don't think the association you're thinking about would be that common/ usual... FWIW I remember the boys we knew managing to have something pretty Inbetweeners-style to say about me and every one of my pals, whether it related directly to our names or not...

withorwithoutyou · 05/10/2010 21:31

I love this name, absolutely beautiful.

scottishmummy · 05/10/2010 21:37

flora is v pretty name

WinkyWinkola · 05/10/2010 21:40

It's a gorgeous name.

We never ate marge in our house so was taken aback by the spreads easily thing. What a daft thing. Don't let that stop you using such a lovely name.

EmmalinaC · 05/10/2010 21:45

I think it's a beautiful name.

It was on our shortlist for DD1 along with Orla, Elsa and Isla. All beautiful trochaic names (apologies for Jilly Cooper reference!)

In the end we went for one of the other three but not because of the margarine connection and I might still use it if ever we have another DD!

loobylu3 · 05/10/2010 22:02

I love it despite the margarine. Margarine is revolting anyway!

Novusleaf · 05/10/2010 22:09

I've got a Flora. Can't see the problem about marg/easy spread - what idiots to care about that! Anyway, she so suits her name and I still love it.

Am a bit perplexed though, when we're asked how to spell it... and then there was the person who said they'd never heard of that name... have you never been in a supermarket, I said?

Wolfblass · 05/10/2010 22:19

We have an Aunty Flo (Flora)

Timeless, Strong, Original and very unpopular! Smile

A1980 · 07/10/2010 10:08

I know two Flora's. One is a friend's child aged 14 and the other is a colleauge aged about 45.

Margarine never crossed my mind :)

It suited both of them very nicely. Go for it!

To be honest kids will always find something to tease about. I wouldn't let that put you off if you like the name.
