We need some help! Confused We are torn between two different names for our soon to be born baby girl. It's down to either Imogen or Charis (pronounced "Karis"). Could you please tell me which one you prefer and why. Also, whether you think people would constantly mispronounce Charis and say "Charis" with a ch sound. We don't like the spelling Carys or Karis. Thanks! Smile

P.S. I would not mispronouce Charis. I agree I prefer the spelling Charis.

I have a Charis and pronounce it "karis"
I think it's a great name, totally unique at school, and it only gets mis pronounced once, and then everyone knows!!
Have just come across a Karis in my son's class and I just don't think the name looks right.
When DD was a baby, we did get the comment, are we welsh everytime I said her name, and that was frustrating having to explain it wasn't the welsh version but the greek version, but don't get that so much now. And my DD loves her name as she is the only one in her school

I love Charis. My irrational hatred for the name Imogen is well documented, but even reading it makes my skin crawl.

lcj68 · 25/09/2010 16:28

thesecondcoming- it's simple really, the "h" is silent, just like in chloe and christopher.
To me it's the only way of saying it, Ch-aris or sh-aris just doesn't sound right

I am a Charis and people constantly mispronounce my name. My brother named his daughter after me, but called her Karis (Mick Jagger has a daughter whose name is spelled like this too). I do like that it's unusual and has interesting origins though.

I always get compliments on my name and it's a lot more popular now than it was when I was younger, so I have found an increase in the number of people who CAN pronounce it. But I must admit it can be quite frustrating.

thesecondcoming think of Charisma - you'd never pronounce that sh-arisma...

MrsSchadenfreude · 27/09/2010 21:42

I used to work with a Charis Imogen Grin

stressheaderic · 27/09/2010 21:49

I taught a Charise once, a really sweet little girl, but hers was pronounced Cha-reese. I think it was a bit of a made-up name tbh, but she really suited it. It reminded me of the word 'cherish' and I liked that.

I dislike Imogen. I just see Mog in the middle of it whenever I look at it.

I like Keryn and Kerin at the moment.

I love Charis (pronounced Karis), and wanted the name for our new baby girl, until DH chose Alara :)

Lexx · 29/09/2010 21:54

Thanks everyone for your input. I think we have decided.....but have 2 more months to think about it- and probably keep changing our minds! Think we are leaning towards Charis as Imogen seems to be getting very popular. But we will see what the baby looks like and then make a decision!
