All very speculative at the moment as am not pregnant, but would I love the name Jacob for a boy.

I'm a bit worried that there would be problems with my family though. I had a cousin called Jake who died from a sudden illness when he was just four years old. My family was extremely close at the time and it was, obviously, devastating for all of us.

I'd love to remember my cousin by using the variant of his name, but I really really want to avoid causing my family any pain. Would I be unreasonable to consider it? I would definitely want to talk it over with my aunt and uncle and grandparents before making it official, but I don't know whether I'm crazy even to think about it.

Maybe a middle name?

If you liove ut,m then I would use it, but I would discuss with your uncle and aunt first (but in a "this is what I am going to do, but I thought I would let you know so that it is not too much of a shock" way). After all Jacob and Jake are not the same name. I also wouldn't worry about it until I was pg, especially until I knew I was having a boy!
