I am currently 20 weeks pg. Haven't really decided on names yet, have discussed generally with dh ones that we like but no firm decisions. Anyway, a new girl started at my work this week and when she found out that I was pg she said, in all seriousness, "Well, don't call it Grace, because that's what I'm calling mine and I'll probably still be working here when I have it". She isn't pg as far as I know, thought is due to get married next year. I just laughed it off, but AIBU to be shocked that someone would really think that if I had liked the name, I would actually not choose it because someone who I had only just met told me they had picked it for their hypothetical daughter?? It's not as if it is an unusual name. Really??

It could just be her sense of humour. I expect it was tongue-in-cheek.

As you say, it's a very popular name so she must know that it's very likely someone else will choose it.

I have an acquaintance that I've known for about twenty years. She demanded that no-one she knew was allowed to call their daughters Daisy, as her daughter was going to be called Daisy. One day.

She eventually had said daughter last year. She called her Lily. The exact same name as the daughter of one of her best friends

I thought at first it was tongue in cheek because I couldn't actually believe that she had said it, but the more I think about it, the more I think she was serious, and a few other friends had commented that she had seemed a bit intense and OTT during the discussion.

Yes, some people are bonkers really do think like that. I had a couple of women say something similar to me when I was expecting DD. People's taste in names changes anyway, just ignore her.

We have close friends who on finding out I was pregnant, told us we are not allowed to use a certain boys name and a certain girls name as if they decide to have a second thats the names they have choosen.

Since having their first, 11 years ago, they haven't decided if they are going to have another but apprently in their eyes no one is allowed to use those names

I would just ignore it. Grace, fgs, it's not even as if it's something really unusual. Imagine if it was in your power to declare a moratorium on your favourite names. "Ahem.. ... Hello, world. It's come to my attention that a lot of you are using Emily for your daughters. Some of you are even called Emily yourselves. Do you not realise that that's my favourite name? I hereby give notice that the general license of the name is revoked at my pleasure, and ask all Emilys to report to my desk for re-naming. Next on the agenda, a little word about the name Jack..."

oh yes! my sil has done this and it has pissed me right off.

there are very few names i like, let alone want to use and she has declared we can't use the only one i really like. apparently it's on her list

she is 21 and doesn't even have a boyfriend let alone plan on having any dc in the next 10 years (at least)

ffs she has a list of 5 names she wont let us use. well, so she thinks! if we can't think of another in the next 15 weeks she will be in for a shock.

I never knew people thought like this until I joined MN and lurked on these baby name threads to entertain myself. Apparently people do! But I've managed to avoid them so far in RL.

People are nuts. Our NCT group have all kept mum about their names, I think just in case any were the same as others. I'm the last one in the group to be due so really hoping that none of them have a Maggie or a Sebastian but if they do there will just have to be 2!
I've a friend that didn't name her daughter Lily because an acquaintance at the time had a DD of the same name. They are no longer in touch and now she wishes she had just gone ahead.
Let us all name our children whatever the h* we want!

when I was expecting my 2nd we were considerign naming her Petrea or Petrina afer my paternal grandmother (whom was Petra) my sister said No you cant do that as its the name I want if I change my mind about having more children. (She had never wanted more than 1 it is now 11 years ago she still hasnt got more than 1) I was shocked she actaully felt it was her choice to "keep" the name..

dd2 wasnt named it but merely because we didnt feel it suited her
