What do you think of Gwendolen? I find myself liking the nn Wendy more and more. Although I also like Gwen and Winnie.

I love Gwendoline and Gwen. I probably wouldn't use Wendy as it's the name of my closest friend but I think it's pretty.

Medee · 09/09/2010 16:33

Wendy isn't necessarily a shortening of Gwendoline, it is a name in its own right (coined by JM Barrie for Peter Pan.)

NorbertDentressangle · 09/09/2010 16:39

I like Gwen but I'm afraid Wendy always makes me think of Bendy Wendy, a phrase that a childrens TV series made popular recently (can't remember the programme)

I think any name that's pretty in its own right, and also has three equally lovely nicknames for her to choose from if she wants to reinvent herself as she grows up, is a winner.

That said, my favorite spelling for it would be Gwendolyn, which I believe is a traditional spelling and not part of the whole "replacing "i"s with "y"s trend of recent years.

miamix · 09/09/2010 20:39

Gwendoline = Malory Towers! Grin

Wendy = Peter Pan to me and a bit old fashioned but I hear that's quite trendy and there's nothing really wrong with it... not my choice but I'm sure it would be fab on the right little girl.

pointydog · 09/09/2010 20:41

wendy is dreadful

plonker · 09/09/2010 20:56

I know a wonderful Wendy, so it's thumbs up from me Smile

pointydog · 09/09/2010 21:06

I had a best friend called wendy. It's still a dreadful name though Wink

Cicatrice · 09/09/2010 21:09

I met a very dignified grown up matriarch type lady called Wendy. It didn't suit her at all.

Becky99 · 09/09/2010 21:14

Wendy is bad.

hester · 09/09/2010 21:19

Probably the ghastliest person I ever met was called Wendy, so it's hard for me to be objective, but I'm not mad keen on Wendy. Or Winnie. Gwen is ok.

DomesticG0ddess · 10/09/2010 09:51

I like Gwendoline/Gwen, but agree that Wendy is bad.

cloudydays · 10/09/2010 16:05

Wendy let me in
I want to be your friend
I want to guard your dreams and visions.
Just wrap your legs round these velvet rims
And strap your hands 'cross my engines.

...

Together, Wendy, we can live with the sadness
I will love you with all the madness in my soul
Will you walk with me out on the wire
'Cause baby I'm just a scared and lonely rider
But I wanna know how it feels
I wanna know if love is wild babe
I wanna know is love is real...

Come on, if it's a cool enough name for Bruce Springsteen, it's cool enough for anyone! I think Wendy is great.

cloudydays · 10/09/2010 16:06

Damn. "IF" love is real, obviously. Annoyed with myself that I ruined that amazing lyric.

wendyreddarling · 10/09/2010 16:57

I love the name Wendy because obviously because it's my name. I like it because it's never become massivley trendy and I've only ever met two other Wendy's.

PaulineCampbellJones · 10/09/2010 17:15

The only Wendy I know uses bronzer instead if face powder as she is that orange. And has peroxide White hair.

Bagpusstree · 10/09/2010 17:32

Wendy. Windy we used to call her at school. Love Gwen/dolyn though.
