I would appreciate opinions on the name Georgia. Do you see it as a classic name? Will it age well or date?

Other names we are considering are:

Clara
Lucia
Cecilia

How do these compare to Georgia (or our two starting point names, Lucy and Nina)

Thanks :)

I like all six names. All fairly classic.

Not much help.

Georgia - Think will age well, personally I associate it with the state.. Teasing potential: Georgie Porgie, also obviously comes from George so that might be a nickname..

Personally much prefer the others, Lucy is my favourite. It has a nice meaning too.

I agree that they're all fairly classic and shouldn't age badly.

DontWorryBaby · 08/09/2010 19:52

Georgia is lovely but a certain age of children struggle to pronounce it... A friend's DD was known as "dodger" through nursery. :o

pantaloons · 08/09/2010 19:54

All 4 are nice and will age well, but Georgia is probably the most common. There are 82 kids in DD's school, so about 40 girls, 3 of these are Georgias.

moragsoverhereplease · 08/09/2010 20:00

I like Georgia but prefer Georgina, it is less popular right now and more clasic and timeless I think.

Cecilia and Clara are lovely names aswell less common that Georgie will be at school.

flopsy1974 · 08/09/2010 20:38

Not keen on Georgia. Lucia is nice.

kat2504 · 08/09/2010 23:02

Unfortunately "Georgia" is on the naughty girls list of teachers' opinions about names. wrong as that may be! I personally prefer Georgina too.

diddl · 09/09/2010 07:34

Lucia is lovely.

Prefer Cecily to Cecilia.

Libbyloulou · 09/09/2010 14:56

And it's a girl!! Think this decision is going to take the full 4 and a half months left ;-)

I'll go one better; I prefer Georgiana to Georgia or Georgina. My cousin is Georgiana after the Duchess of Devonshire. You still get the same nicknames but it sounds a little more elegant to me.

yama · 09/09/2010 16:21

I love Lucy the most.

LizzyG44 · 09/09/2010 22:02

Agree, I love the name Georgina and George for short rather than Georgia is easier to pronounce

MogTheForgetfulCat · 09/09/2010 22:04

Love Clara, Lucia and Nina. Less keen on the others.

meadowlarks - I really like the name Georgiana too, but its the kind of name you will be spelling out for the rest of your life (which I am less keen on....)

The Duchess's name was pronounced Jor-jay-na (not sure how to spell phoneticall?) whilst most people will read the name and pronounce it as Jor-jee-anna...

How does your cousin pronounce her name?

meadowlarks · 09/09/2010 22:39

podmumlet - Well, funnily enough, my aunt always said she wanted to pronounce it jor-jay-na, but my uncle flat out refused because he thought it sounded like vagina (!?). Anyway, despite my aunt continuing to pronounce it that way, everyone at school and her friends assumed it was pronounced jor-jee-anna, so it's kind of stuck ever since. I personally prefer the latter pronunciation, because saying it jor-jay-na now would just sound like you were mispronouncing Georgina.

Love Georgia but was put off it myself for my daughter as it's very very popular in Australia. Although I haven't heard many over here.

mathanxiety · 23/09/2010 19:03

I really dislike Georgia, can't put my finger on the reason. I don't even like it for Georgia O'Keeffe, keep on thinking she should have had a different name.

I love Lucy, Clara and Cecilia, and also Celia.

Kathleen123 · 24/09/2010 13:39

Georgia is my favourite from your list. Yes, I see it as a classic name.

pressyourthumbs · 24/09/2010 14:02

Hmm, I am very suspicious that you found my name list in the supermarket libbyloulou! I think Georgia and Clara are becoming popular, if that puts you off at all, but they are all nice choices.
Have you thought about Claudia?

pigindisguise · 24/09/2010 17:14

I love all those names but Georgia is my favourite. I have always loved it and I do think it will age well. I also love the Ray Charles song.
