Pretty much random choice

I see how much thought is going into your choices; was anyone else named more or less randomly, and did it work out well?
My parents wanted a boy so much that they apparently didn't foresee the possibility of a girl.......though my mother was a midwife.

I was named by my aunt because my parents were convinced I would be a boy too! She didn't choose a random name though -- I ended up with a very popular name in my family that was also a saint's day close to the day I was born. I feel it worked out well; the name is definitely a 'classic' name, and my parents used the Irish version to distinguish me from all the others in the family.

I've got one of those whimsical names that just don't sound grown-up. And, yes, it was on a whim: I had red cheeks, so they named me ... something whimsical and rosy

Father named me after an ex as mother wanted a polish name for me, despite them living in north west uk 30 odd years ago, when no-one would have got it, at all!

My mum's Dad decided to call her a certain name at the register office because he wanted her named after the midwife. Was the first my Grandmother knew of it and her choices were pushed to middle names. My mum hated her name and changed it by deed poll as an adult.

we just chose names we liked no family names for either of my DS's for first or middle names and no significance to place they were conceived/born, time of year born or anything else. Just names me and OH agreed we both liked, I could never insist we had a name I like that OH wasn't keen on as quite a few mums seem to want to do, the baby is 50% dad 50% mum so thet should get just as much say! I can't understand how parents can't agree on a name!!! Mini rant over sorry.

I agree mrsunreasonable (like your name by the way!) I'm in the current dilemma on name chocies and we've just gone with what we both like although one of the boys' names is the same name as my grandfather- but its coincidental.

There was thought for ds's name but not too much meaning. I just really wanted a boy called Sky throughout pregnancy and then we found Skyler/Schuyler in a baby name book.

We were sure we were having a boy, but when DD arrived at 27 weeks we were caught a bit on the hop! We thought we'd have ages left to choose a name. We had a holiday booked for when I went on maternity leave, but obviously we couldn't go, so we named DD after the destination of our cancelled holiday (Nothing like Blackpool or Bognor, I promise! Her name's Skye)

my grandmother arrived early .so when she great grandfather named her he thought of the ship that had just docked in the harbour -the orissa charlotte she was alwasys known as riss/rissy .just as well it wasn't the titanic .
