Do you think Samuel is boring?
I have been thinking about it a lot, but it is quite popular.
What do you think of Samuel?

Yes, I find Sam a little dull to be honest.

So many, all Sam B, Sam D etc at school.

Compared with your other recent suggestions, yes . Nothing wrong with Sam though, just quite commonplace. Has the same feel as Ben or Tom to my ears (or Steve or Mike as adults).

No I like it, I would not make any assumptions about a Sam/Samuel before meeting them. It is a name for all walks of life, races, classes.

I don't find any names boring!

It is fine but indeed very widely used. There were 2 in ds's class last year.

No, it's a classic name.

I think it's the same as say Matthew, Thomas, William etc. All popular, all shorten-able and all will stand the test of time.

it's LOVELY! a name that sounds like a smile.

it's one of my favourite of the classic type of names such as Benjamin, William, Thomas etc which have great shortenings. I think with boy's names, it's ok to have a common/popular name as there seems to be less variation somehow with boys' names. and boys somehow suit straightforward, simple, plain names. I think girls' names are far more complicated on every level!

and if you like it, that's the most important thing.

There may be a few Sam's around, it's actually not hugely common, but DS was the only one in his class at primary school. There are two or three at secondary school. It's a classic name that doesn't date. It's a strong and dependable name that really suits DS.

Oh crap, it's the only boys name we've even, maybe, half been able to speak about as a possibility, ish.

Gorgeous, I have one! When he was a baby, an old lady stopped me in the supremarket and asked me his name. Then she told me that was her husband's name and he had 'been a fine man'

we have one, it is quite popular, but there wasn't another in his nursery (48 children) although we have come across others.
i liked it as the story is that hannah really wanted a child and when samuel arrived she said that God had listened to her prayers for a child.
so if that is you, it's a good name to use!
having said that though, it's not a religious sounding name so no suppositions made on that count.
all in all a great name. it says friendly and dependable to me.
DH is David and he says that he likes having a boring common name - think it's easier for men to cope with those tbh.
and it's generally around 10th in the charts, so plenty of others more popular.

Both the Dc's have never had one in their classes either, so not as common as Jack etc round here.

Tbh, I don't think it is that popular - there is not another one in my DS's nursery and none of my friend's DC are called it either.

DS1 has a far more popular name (has been in top5 for years) so I guess 'common' names don't bother me

You see, it does fit nicely with ds's (Amos and Eli) and dh and I are really struggling to agree on a boys name. I just worry if I might regret such a big compromise on my part. It does sound similar to my name choice which dh has vetoed, so i thought maybe we could call him Samuel and i will use my name choice as his nn (Shem) - crafty!

How about Shemuel, with nickname Shem?

No, dh won't have a Shem name :( I might get my way eventually, but not looking likely.

Prefer Samuel to Sam. Sam is so common, with boys and girls.

It's a lovely name, especially if you can stick to Samuel. Both my brother and I have names with v common short versions, but we have always used the full version when introducing ourselves, our family always used the full version, and we very rarely get anyone using the short name.
