Everyone we have told we are thinking of naming our child Jessica has responded with 'oh'. Nobody seems to like it except us!

i love it but i am biased. My Jessica is 7 and is just starting to want to be called Jess. we picked it because it had nice abbreviations so she has options.
i didn't realise quite how popular it was when we picked it but i still love it (and there is an adult Jessica in dh's extended family who it also suits but she is most def a full Jessica).

don't pay too much attention when people say it is overused. it is popular, as i say, but not as much as some names (can't think of an example though). and i think i would far rather have/give a name which people knew how to say and thought, how pretty, than one where people thought "huh? what? did they make that up?"

It's fine - don't worry in 3 years only 3 people in RL have ever said they like my daughter's name. Most people have said nothing when I've told them so I assume they either don't like it or are indifferent. That's fine - we like it and the meaning behind it. More people on MN seem to like her name though so that's good.

Her name is not Jessica BTW. Jessica is nice - love Jess. Maybe a bit popular though?

It's a lovely name-classic, timeless, nice nn, no problems!

tammytoby · 03/09/2010 14:42

I find it really dull and overused. There are so many other lovely classic names, which I'd prefer.

But no, there is nothing 'wrong' with Jessica of course.

Just a little dull and unimaginative - the Jane of its day

shoobidoo · 03/09/2010 14:55

Nothing wrong with it, but indeed quite overused and a little bland. Not keen on Jess as nickname.

Lora69 · 03/09/2010 17:37

Its boring, thats why the 'oh' reaction

kiwijesta · 04/09/2010 08:51

It's my name and I'm def a Jess, but I don't mind being either, just not Jessie. To me that's a boys name - Jesse. BTW I like my name and my parents also got the idea from Some mothers do ave em!

Lizzieloubee · 04/09/2010 09:04

I like it - despite the fact that when I say it it sounds more like "Jeffica or Jethica".Stupid lisp!! Its my middle name :)

We've got a Jessica and have never met another, anywhere. She is called Jess most of the time and it most definitely suits her.
