Lola, Laurel or Perla?

TwoPeasOnePod · 31/08/2010 16:37

Hey you lovely folk, I am due my 2nd daughter mid-September and have no idea what to call her..
So far,the shortest shortlist is reduced to

Lola
Laurel (or Lorel?)
Perla (because im 'not allowed' Pearl, according to DP)
Phoebe
Holly/Hollie

I think at the mo I actually prefer Perla, but does it sound daft?! I dont know if my pregnant brain has made it up, cos I dont recall seeing many people called it...All opinions welcome Smile

Lola is v v v popular here in SW London, she may be one of many.

strandedatsea · 31/08/2010 16:44

I liked Laurel when I was pregnant with dd1 but wasn't sure if it was a real name or not. She ended up with Lauren as a middle name.

I think you might have made up Perla! Not that it matters, go for it if you like it. At least there won't be many more of them.

Lola, too Charlie and....

smother · 31/08/2010 16:45

Lola - lots of them
Laurel (or Lorel?) - and Hardy?
Perla - Pearl would be better. Perla does sound a bit daft imo!
Phoebe - ok
Holly/Hollie - don't like

What about:

Lauren
Ellen
Sorrel

TwoPeasOnePod · 31/08/2010 16:50

I thought that too about Lola, bit too popular now... Im just worried that Perla is some kind of knitting technique or incontinence product that ive glanced somewhere and has lodged in my daft pregnant brain Grin

pearl is lovely, perla sounds like a sanitary product.

minipie · 31/08/2010 16:52

Perla - reminds me of La Perla underwear.

Lola - was a showgirl

Laurel - really like (Laurel not Lorel)

Phoebe - is ok

Holly - really like

How about Hazel or Willow (since you like tree names Smile)

ValiumSingleton · 31/08/2010 16:58

Perla is worse in my opinion. It's underwear. I know of only one Pearl, she is 7. I prefer it to Perla

I'm not a fan of Lola at all.

Laurel is beautiful, I really like that.
Phoebe is beautiful as well, love that one.

Holly is ok, but blah for some reason.. Hazel is gorgeous, I agree with pp's suggestion

TitsalinaBumSquash · 31/08/2010 17:01

I always think of Porn Star when i hear Lola sorry, it might be because i knew a Lola who was an armature Porn star and a generally unpleasant person to boot.

Phoebe is lovely my first choice if next dc is a dd.
Love Hollie, not to keen on the other 2 tbh.

TwoPeasOnePod · 31/08/2010 17:19

Oh dear, I'm a bit put off Perla now..Pearl is pretty much the only name I truly want to use, desperately, but DP says absolutely not..Sad wish there was a way to change his mind. Any suggestions on how to change it?!
Also just thought, Lola is a bit reminiscent of textspeak 'lol'...would hate for her to acquire Lol as a nickname {beurgh}

Perla is the name of one of the mice in Cinderella. Don't like Hollie, Phoebe and Laurel the best-don't use Lorel; looks like you can't spell.

lulabellamozerella · 31/08/2010 17:25

I love love love Laurel, love the whole evergreen part of the meaning. Changing his mind r.e Pearl... hmm what's his problem with it? I love it tbh, think its similar to Ruby, Lily etc but not as popular.

horatia · 31/08/2010 17:32

Lola - not keen
Laurel - like
Perla - La Perla underwear
Phoebe - like
Holly/Hollie - like with spelling Holly

How about

Amber
Coralie
Penelope/Penny
Louisa
Iona
Ianthe
Violet
Nina
Talia
Jasmine
Paloma
Julia
Miriam
Cecilia
Clara
Jennifer
Larissa/Lara
Lucy
Lianna
Lydia

Other names meaning pearl, or variants of Pearl

Magali
Margaret/Maggie
Megan
Perlita
Perlette
Peninah
Rita

mathanxiety · 31/08/2010 17:43

I like Laurel and Pearl, sad you can't convince your DH. I definitely wouldn't use the spelling Lorel -- looks like you can't spell either Laurel or L'Oreal.

Hazel and Willow are so nice too. Marsaili (almost rhymes with parsley) is a Scottish variant of 'pearl' via Marjorie)

strandedatsea · 31/08/2010 18:17

To change his mind: Just tell him you have decided on something awful (I won't give any examples for fear of offending anyone but I am sure you can think of something) and won't budge. You can be as hormonal on this as you want. Eventually say your only compromise is Pearl. You could even do this during labour or just after the birth - he'll probably agree to anything then.

morganlebuffay · 31/08/2010 21:39

Lola - a flimsy nickname-name that's everywhere now(though Charlie and Lola almost manages to convert me for the duration of the episode).

Laurel (or Lorel?) - Laurel is lovely (but Lorel spelling looks like a shampoo). Only downside is it would be misheard as Lauren a lot, I think.

Perla - La Perla the lingerie, not keen on the sound either

Phoebe - Gorgeous, love it

Holly/Hollie - quite bland imho, though inoffensive

MollysChambers · 31/08/2010 21:50

Lola - really don't like at all.
Laurel - Like. Much nicer than Lauren too.
Perla - reminds me of bras.
Phoebe - meh.
Holly - Like it but maybe better for a winter baby??

lowrib · 31/08/2010 22:07

I like Lola and Laurel.

Just in case ... have you considered Lowri (Welsh version of Laura) or Elodie?

This is a great baby names website by the way. It's not the rettiest but it has loads of info.

Pearla is a name apparently, you're not going mad! - See this page

Here are lots of other variants.

HTH Smile

midnightexpress · 31/08/2010 22:11

I like Laurel and Phoebe very much. Holly is OK. Lola overdone and sounds like an NN and Perla sounds like bras to me too. But I do like Pearl.

ReshapeWhileDamp · 31/08/2010 23:05

Perla is posh knickers. Sorry.

Lola has connotations of Show Girl, even if overlaid by Charlie And, these days.

Laurel/Lauren is nice.

Holly's ok, but about as popular as Lola at the moment. If you like it though, use it! Smile

Firawla · 31/08/2010 23:12

Lola is the nicest, then Holly

I don't like the look of perla it sounds like a product name, something a toilet roll would be called or something like that! Its mainly due to the spelling. Pearla would maybe be better, but just Pearl is the best of those really..

I think Laurel sounds a bit middle aged for some reason, like Lorna or Lois.. not keen

Doesn't matter if Lola is popular, its still the nicest one, its a really nice cute name (obviously popular for a reason)

Along the same lines as Lola these are also nice: Lila, Leah, Lily, Lula, Layla

morganlebuffay · 31/08/2010 23:23

I think for good and reliable information, the best website imo is behind the name.
