Dh has decided no names ending in 's' (as we have Iris and Amos already).
I am cross as I had gotten used to the idea of a baby Doris, i really love it now! I am less keen on Jean and Joan, which were originally my ideas, but now he is becoming insistant it should be one of them.
Up for discussion at the moment are

Thora
Bess (not Elizabeth) - I am not too sure about this.
Thelma
Thisbe
Beryl - dh still likes this
Enid - I am loving this still adn dh still thinks it is ok.
Angela - dh is saying no, but i really love it.

Dh is mad on Jean and Joan but I am not too sure anymore
Would love some opinions, so i can put forward a case we he comes home later!
I daren't start on the boys, we might do each other some damage Grin

Jean and Joan are old lady names, not in a nice way. My Mum is one of these names and hates it.

I quite like Beryl and Thisbe from your choices.

MollysChambers · 30/08/2010 13:33

Thisbe? How do you pronounce that?

stinkypants · 30/08/2010 13:37

the only ones i'm really keen on are enid and angela, proabably becuase the others just seem very old fashioned, but perhaps they are coming back in - i am not sure though. in a similar style i would prefer edith.
remember that the child has to like the name.
i dont think a 3rd 's' ending matters, i ddoubt anyone would notice this.i like iris and amos a lot.

breatheslowly · 30/08/2010 14:19

Thisbe just reminds me of the farce in A Midsummer Night's Dream.

Thora Yes
Bess (not Elizabeth) - I am not too sure about this. Ok but I prefer Beth
Thelma No
Thisbe No
Beryl - dh still likes this Hideous
Enid - I am loving this still adn dh still thinks it is ok. It's ok
Angela - dh is saying no, but i really love it. Ok

cyteen · 30/08/2010 14:35

Eglu, I am rofl that you slate Jean and Joan as old lady names but go on to endorse Beryl Grin

Sorry OP, I don't like any of your names. Except Jean and Joan, either of which go well with your other DC.

lifeas3plus1 · 30/08/2010 15:51

I love Jean and Bess!

Unfortunately my least favourite is Angela. I don't know why, I just really don't like it sorry.

NiceCuppaT · 30/08/2010 17:50

Sorry not keen on any of your names, Bess is best, but ends with an s!!

PaigeTurner · 30/08/2010 17:58

Would you consider Mabel?

Kathleen123 · 30/08/2010 18:04

Out of the names you've mentioned - IMHO Jean is by far the nicest.

deemented · 30/08/2010 18:10

What about Bessie or Tessie?

autodidact · 30/08/2010 18:12

None of those, sorry. If it was choose or die I'd go for Bess.

LucyLouLou · 30/08/2010 18:21

Quite honestly, I seriously dislike all those names. I also think your DH has done your DC a favour in axing Doris as well. Bess is the only one I find a little bit okay, but it wouldn't make it onto a top 100 of my favourites tbh. On the plus side, any of those names would virtually guarantee your DC is the only kid in class with their name!

MummyLovesSadie · 30/08/2010 19:15

I'm very much into names that are different but not unheard of. However I have to say that I don't like any of the names on your list, sorry.

MollysChambers · 30/08/2010 20:19

Hmm. So Thisbe is pronounced in the same way as frisbee. That has got to be one of the most God awful names I have ever heard. Don't really like any on your list but if I had to choose would go for Thora.

morganlebuffay · 30/08/2010 21:37

Joan rocks. Mad Men has surely made it more acceptable? For me it's one of those names where I dont imagine present-day Joans doddering about, but rather I imagine girls and young women called Joan in the 1940s.

Bess is quite nice (though I prefer it to have a full name) but possibly doomed to always be called Beth. Jean is OK imo. Enid is growing on me, I like the Arthurian side to it, but not sure I'd actually like to be called it myself.

I think Beryl and Thelma are - well - let's just say that they are so far from being my cup of tea that I would actually be spurting them out, sorry. Beryl is just Cheryl with a blue rinse.

horatia · 31/08/2010 13:46

Thora - Hird
Bess - like but only as nn for Elizabeth
Thelma - and Louise
Thisbe - Frisbee
Beryl - not keen
Enid - Blyton
Angela - like

How about

Juliet
Bethan
Beatrice
Elise
Talia
Theresa/Tess
Theoni
Elise
Angelica
Rowena
Daphne
Miriam
Theodora
Victoria

smother · 31/08/2010 14:33

Hey, what about Joan (to please DH) and then use nn Joni? Joni is a fab name!

I think Jean is better as a middle name personally - perhaps there's a potential compromise there?

And Doris - this is such a wonderful wonderful name, I love it... is there anyway you could persuade DH?

For what it's worth, here are my opinions on the rest:

Thora - nope, odd name and sounds frumpy
Bess (not Elizabeth) - like Bess a lot as a nn, Bessie too. Also love Beth and Tess.
Thelma - like, but makes me think of '...and Louise' and is a bit too like the elephant...
Thisbe - ooooh no! tis a gross name for a girl!
Beryl - prefer Meryl. Actually really like Meryl.
Enid - Blyton
Angela - really not to my taste, it's dated (makes me think of ageing ladies with too much makeup on for some reason).

smother · 31/08/2010 14:34

If it helps, why don't you try imagining which you would prefer to be called yourself?
