Too boring. Too long? Can you have a middle name with it when there are already two names?

I didn't think I would like a name like that until I met someone around my age or older (early-mid 30's) with the name and it really suited her well and I thought it was cool.

A few things: those are my mum's first and middle names. Note the fact that my mum is over 50.

That aside, would you expect people to say the entire thing every time? Because I think people would just end up saying Sara or Sara-Lou, which sounds like Sarah Lee the cake mixture. I think it's fine to have a middle name as well.

If you like it, go for it.

The person I met with that name, is called that every time from what. All of her colleagues call her that. I'm not sure about family as I don't know her that well yet. So maybe people would. You don't have to accept people shortening your name if you don't want to, especially when you become an adult.

But given my points above, I'm really not sure either. I just found myself very surprised that I liked it.

I agree that they are quite old traditional nnames too but traditional can be good :)

Nothing wrong with a more traditional name if you like it. I really like Emily, not many names go well with our odd surname and Emily goes so well but it gets slated for being so popular!

It's not to my taste at all - I simply do not get hyphenating. Both names are lovely, but put them together and they just lose something, but that's just my opinion.

My friend has just given her baby a hyphenated name and at 4 months old, they've already dropped the 2nd part of it in every day use. Honestly - what was the point, why not just use it as a separate middle name?

Not nice, very 70s....give it another twenty or so years and it might be palatable.

Is is very 70's but then again Ethel, Mabel and other horrendous granny names are making comebacks. I would rather be named Sara-Louise hands down over those :)

We'll see. I probably wouldn't go for it but just very surprised how well it suited someone my age.

Beautiful names although I would drop the hyphen. I hardly look at the name threads any more as so many of the names are so obviously made-up or too wacky. Your suggestions are lovely, classic names.

Well I'm "only" 30 and I like classic names. Nothing too wacky or made-up.

Most of my friends and colleagues are Sara's, Lisa's Alison's, Caroline's etc. Not many people from my generation seem to have names that are "wacky" and they work on adults and they're nice. I want to choose classic names.

2 first names = precious parents imho.

I think they are both classic names...when unhyphenated. I know someone with a really naff hyphenated name and I hate having to say it, sounds really silly. But don't know her well enough to not say the full name.

This is all really interesting! It seems that two old school, classic names are deemed "precious" and too long when put together.

But people are out asking for opinions on names such as Jessamine, Nyree, Indie, etc. Also names of the same length as Sara-Louise such as Opheila aren't deemed too long to for people to be bothered to say.

It's very interesting. We'll see but perhaps not.

I've never watched Coronation Street in my life, so have no clue about it.

I've also noticed a HUGE typo in my original post. it says if I ever have a DH when it should say if I ever have a DD! Pretty big mistake.

I probably wouldn't use it but I was just very surprised at how well it worked on someone my age that I met.

I like both names, hyphenated or separate. They are both lovely names that have lasted for hundreds of years because they work.

All of my three children have 'classic' (or boring, as some might see them) names. I wanted them to have names they could shape, not names that would shape them. (Analogous to people who wear great clothes and then get on with great lives, rather than letting the clothes wear them.)

Two of them have names which could be definitely be described as 70s names. I love all three names: a great name is just a great name and let's see how all the slightly more, shall we say, 'imaginative' names last, shall we?

Some of us are just ahead of the curve, that's all.
