Marius – too weird?

I like the name, although I realise it is very uncommon. Would it be a weird name for a boy in a British society?
Any difficulties with pronouncing the name? Would it be automatically shortened to Mario?

I think it could be mis-read as Marcus.
It would certainly bbe unusual.
Isn't there a mouse character called Marius?

birdofthenorth · 24/08/2010 11:28

Being a Les Mis fan I like Marius, BUT my cousin is called this (in the UK) and I'm afraid he had a LOT of teasing at school, along the lines of

"Marius, Marius, when you gonna marry us?"

"Marion", "Maid Marion", "shagged Robin Hood lately?"

"Where's Luigi Super Marius?" (this one may be out of date for current kids thankfully!)

These taunts were in a poshish area of the home counties btw, not in a Grange Hill-esque tough school.

Unfortunately I think the name sounds feminine to (young) British ears... But I can see why you like it.

stressedHEmum · 24/08/2010 11:46

Marius will always be a vampire to me. I think I am showing my age.

morganlebuffay · 24/08/2010 13:27

Yes. To be blunt.

But don't see why it would be 'shortened' to Mario when the two names are the same length, and it's not like Mario is a common name either.

SirBoobAlot · 24/08/2010 13:42

Will you join in our crusade? Who will be strong and stand with me? Etc...

I like it - but it would give off very pretentious and up-you-self vibes.

cloudydays · 24/08/2010 13:42

I love it. I understand what birdofthenorth is saying about teasing in school, but these days there's a bit more diversity in a lot of schools (Marius being a very traditional name in other parts of Europe) and so many kids with more unusual names, that it might not stand out for your son as much as it would have for her cousin when he was in school (guessed from the post that he's grown now, sorry if I'm wrong).

I'm a Les Mis fan too so maybe I'm biased! I'd say have a think about where you live, how diverse etc. and go for it if it's the name you love.

diddl · 24/08/2010 13:43

I think it´s a great name.

Don´t think its pretentious at all tbh.

collision · 24/08/2010 13:45

Sings 'Marius what's wrong with you today? It looks as if you've seen a ghost, some wine and say what's going ooooonnnnnnn!'

Another Les Miserables fan here too.

Not keen.

Marcus is nicer.

ValiumSingleton · 24/08/2010 13:45

No, I really like it. I think it is less potentially pretentious than Julius. I love Julius though.

Marius is good. I love Marcus as well.

gorionine · 24/08/2010 13:45

I really like it.

SirBoobAlot · 24/08/2010 13:46

A ghost you say?
A ghost maybe.
She was just like a ghost to me.
One minute there and she was gooone!

collision · 24/08/2010 13:47

'A heart full of luuuuuuuuurve, a heart full of soooonnnng, Im doing everything all wrong.....'

Attenborough · 24/08/2010 13:48

I am agog! I am aghast....

Attenborough · 24/08/2010 13:48

I knew as soon as I saw this thread EXACTLY how it would end up derailed...

SirBoobAlot · 24/08/2010 13:50

Oh God, for shame, I do not eveeeeeeen know your name...
Dear, Mademoiselle, I am lost... In your spell...

SirBoobAlot · 24/08/2010 13:51

Is Marius in love at last? I have never heard him "Ohh" and "Ahh"! Grin

Attenborough · 24/08/2010 13:53

We talk of battles to be won
And here he comes like Don Juan
It's better than an opera!

SirBoobAlot · 24/08/2010 13:57

It is time for us all to decide who we are.
Do we fight for the right to one night at the opera now?
Have you asked of yourselves - what's the price you might pay?
Is it simply a game for rich young boys to play?
The colour of the world is changing - day by day...

Attenborough · 24/08/2010 14:03

We should probably get a thread of our own for this...

collision · 24/08/2010 14:03

Grin I might have to go and see it again for the 12th time! I luuuuurve Les Mis.

SirBoobAlot · 24/08/2010 14:05

Grin I still sob my way through the book...

WillowFae · 24/08/2010 14:08

I wanted DH to consider Cosette on our short list for girls - he wouldn't :(

collision · 24/08/2010 14:09

'There's a grief that can't be spoken
There's a pain goes on and oooonnnn
Empty chairs at empty tables
Now my friends are dead and gooooone'

Not sure I could read the book.

SirBoobAlot · 24/08/2010 14:12

The abridged is okay - only read the unabridged if you're a book worm!

elphiethropp · 24/08/2010 14:15

Don't you fret, Monseiur Marius
I don't feel any pain

Its been ages since I saw Les Mis! Maybe I should revisit it.
